I hadn’t read the first book in the Friday Harbor series, but that presented no problem in reading this book number two, because it reads as a stand alone.

I liked Lucy right away, but it took some time to warm up to Sam and his fear-of-commitment attitude. However, his love of his niece, his brothers, and his vineyard soon won me over. Lucy's sister was delightfully evil and her ex-boyfriend impressively wimpy.

The biggest surprises in this book were the touches of magical realism which added a bit of mysterious whimsy to the story. I hadn’t expected to see those passages, and they delighted me.

I will be seeking out the first book and definitely reading the next books in this series.

I enjoyed this book. I did feel that it was leaning towards women's fiction rather than romance. There was an awful lot of the book where the two main characters were apart. In fact I would think that at least half of the book if not more was scenes of them with other people. This makes it hard to really feel the romance. The book was not written with the immediacy that I really prefer but was stepped back just a bit. I guess that's a function of the writing style employed here. It tended toward telling rather than showing. I'm not finding fault with it here because I think it was done on purpose for the tone of the book. It does however force the reader to stand back from the characters a bit.

So the heroine and hero don't even begin any sort of relationship until about half way through the book. I like both of them especially Sam. His character felt more filled out. He was a nice man, strong confident and gentlemanly. Lucy was okay but she felt sort of one dimensional to me. The dialog was excellent and one of the strong points of the book for me. Sam and Lucy had some wonderful interactions while on the page together. There were some wonderful secondary characters. I did like the magical element in the story but I did think it went a little overboard there at the end.

Very very boring and dry book.No chemistry, no intrigue. Nothing worth reading. Whole series was extremely boring ( )
