Another winner from Rose Pressey! Let the fun begin.

Veronica mason and the Voodoo Zombies are playing at a vampire bar, with a record producer coming out to hear them in a few days. All of a sudden mayhem breaks out in the form of a vampire bar fight. When the coast is clear enough Veronica starts making her way to her car. She stops by the new bass player's van and finds him in ashes. With a vision of the staking playing in her mind. So begins this delightfully fun book. Veronica is a witch. One who you could say that her major accomplishment is casting a spell that doesn't ignite. Her best friend Kitty is a werewolf. With staked vamps and visions of the murder on the rise, it is up to Veronica to figure it out. Oh and did I mention the hot new bass player who comes on the scene after her bass player dies? Is he there to help her or just a distraction? But really what's a little distraction when he looks this good?

I absolutely love Rose Pressey's books. This one was pretty good because it had to do with witches, vampires and other paranormal creatures. But this one was especially interesting with quite the plot twists.

We meet Veronica Mason, who is a rockabilly singer and a crappy witch. She has a band with a few vamps and one in particular seems to get under her skin, Frank. Now after a show, her bass player ends up dead and now she's having visions. Strange visions, where they are showing her what happened to the victim but yet hides the identity of the murderer. These things make Veronica really nervous, but she has no idea what is in store for her from this point.

Now to make matters worse at least in her case, her apartment ends up ransacked and her dead bass players bass shows up in her apartment. Now it seems like the police think that she might be in on the murder considering she discovered the body, er, dust. Now this isn't the first body that she ends up discovering and then a strange car is following her. Next she's receiving death threats via notes.

Things really crank up towards the end of the book as it seems to be getting closer and closer to finding out who is behind all of this mayhem. And it really is quite the surprise at the end of the book when you find out who the person is. they weren't exactly a huge character in the book but it makes sense!

I found this book really fun to read, as with all of Rose's books! And it seems that Veronica's magic is going to end up being way better than she thought with the help of her Grandmother. The characters were fun and they were real. They made the story come alive! ( )

I’d like to start off by thanking Rose Pressey for a review copy of Rock ‘n’ Roll is Undead. I was really intrigued by the synopsis and loved the idea of a paranormal book set in a rockabilly world. It’s definitely a unique take on the genre and I was excited to read it.

There were a lot of things I liked about Rock ‘n’ Roll is Undead. The rockabilly scene is vividly portrayed through Veronica’s music, band, lifestyle, and personal style. A lot of thought has obviously gone into building Veronica Mason’s world, which I appreciate. There are a lot of little details that make the book come off the page. The basic storyline is also solid. Though there are some moments where I felt like Veronica was a bit slow on the uptake, the mystery was pretty satisfying, with some nice red herrings thrown in, though there were some moments toward the end of the book that seemed a bit out of sync with the rest of the novel. (I don’t want to say too much about it since I want to keep this spoiler-free, as usual.)

I also liked the general tone of the story. Rock ‘n’ Roll is Undead is light and fluffy, with a lot of humour injected into the story. It reminded me a lot of Nicole Peeler’s Jane True series, though Rose Pressey has a less bawdy feel, and it sort of reminded me of Charlaine Harris, though I think the Sookie books are a bit more serious overall than this one. I can also see this book appealing to fans of Mary Janice Davidson or Janet Evanovitch.

One aspect of the story I didn’t really love was Veronica, oddly enough. I liked bits and pieces of her personality but she seemed really flighty and kind of dumb at some points in the book. It’s not because she’s bad at witchcraft (which she truly is, ending up with a new lipstick at the end of every spell) or because she’s not the kind of kick-butt, take-charge kind of heroine we see in a lot of urban fantasy and paranormal romance; after all, there are some great protagonists who aren’t powerful and their lack of power is what makes their journeys so interesting. I think it boils down to the fact that she didn’t feel fully realized to me – like she had all the makings of a great character but just fell short of the mark. In fact, there were a few characters in the novel that could have used a bit more development to make them stand out a little bit more, instead of seeming like stock characters.

Overall, I’d have to say that Rock ‘n’ Roll is Undead definitely isn’t for everybody but I think it holds a lot of appeal for folks who enjoy light paranormal romance. It’s got a very distinct tone and feel that may not work for people who like a little darkness in their stories but it’s a decent read. I’d suggest reading the excerpt available on the Amazon page (by clicking on the Look Inside option) to see if you like it.

Yes, this book is as quirky as the cover looks. Veronica is not only in a band with vampires, playing at vampire bars but she is a witch. And a very, very bad witch. Not evil, just not any good at it. The running joke is every spell she does she gets a tube of lipstick based on a spell gone wrong when she was 5, so her mom and her best friend are always asking her for lipstick. lol

I love the phrases Rose Pressey uses in this book, I realize she is from Kentucky but that's not so far away from Michigan...is it? Like saying the guys "are going to give me a hard way to go." We say "a hard time." And I laughed so hard when she said she was "wound tighter than my dad's flea market watch."

The story flows fast and you don't know who done it until pretty much the end...by then you are JUST starting to suspect but she keeps throwing in curveballs. Very good mystery, very funny story and great paranormal rules. I like that vampires can have babies...she says they age until they are 25. Plus they can eat food it just give them nutrition.

It's fun, if you like mysteries or paranormal books you will enjoy this. If you like both you will fall in love! ( )
