I only gave this three stars not because it is a bad book -- from a mathematical standpoint, it is extremely well-written and the exercises are plentiful and engaging. It is however, intended as a textbook, and in that it fails somewhat. Used in a class with a good lecturer who provides motivation and intuition, it is fine. But the textbook itself is short on exposition, motivation, and intuition, which particularly in math classes intended for non-math majors (as many calculus courses are) is a shortcoming. (
