"As children, our curiosity about what to expect as our bodies change is met with knowledge and patience. But when we're 50 or 60, our bodies undergo other dramatic (and often just as startling) changes--yet there's no one to prepare us, educate us, or provide guidance on what's "normal." From superficial concerns and everyday aches and pains to more serious medical problems, Dr. John Whyte, chief medical expert for the Discovery Channel, cuts through the confusion. In Is This Normal? he answers a broad range of questions about the physical effects of aging, such as: -How much weight gain is normal as we age--and why is it so hard to lose? -Is it normal to sleep less at night and nap more during the day? -What are the signs of alzheimer's versus normal memory loss? With compassion, reassurance, and friendly guidance, Dr. Whyte provides both male and female readers with cutting-edge advice for the effects of aging they face every day, from hormones and libido to cancer risk and cardiovascular health. Is This Normal? arms readers with the essential knowledge and preventive strategies they need stay healthy and vital for decades to come"--Provided by publisher. This is a good, solid overview of the changes that the human body goes through as it ages. Written by an internist who is the chief medical expert for the Discovery channel, it presents in clear terms and plain language both what is normal for the aging body and what is not.

Dr. Whyte explains how the different body systems work, what happens as they get older, and what we can do about it. He covers all the body systems: the skin and hair, the digestive system, metabolism, eye problems, memory, hearing, pain, sex and mental health. There questionnaires to help you determine if you have a problem or not. Sidebars provide case histories as examples.

If you know a lot about the human body- say, you live on the Web MD site- you might not get that much from this book. The average reader, however, will get a huge insight into how the human body works and how it ages. ( )

Brilliant book! There should be one of these tomes for every stage in a persons life. John Whyte has answered all the questions an 'older' person can ask plus some I wouldn't have thought of. He deals with all the 'niggles' of ageing and advises what is 'normal' and what isn't. Very informative and should definately be a 'must have' on one's library shelf. ( )
