This was a quick enjoyable read about a woman who finds out her hallucinations are real and then goes on an quest to save her own life.

Katherine finds out that all her ancestors were cursed to die at age twenty-four. She needs to find out why and how to stop it. ( )

I admit I was seduced by this gorgeous cover straight away. It had this Gothic Victorian feeling about it. Well, it's totally unrelated to the book. Also, it's not a paranormal romance, more like urban fantasy but with less fighting and more walking *grinning*.

Oh yes, the main characters - Katherine, Chris and Jonathan walk miles and miles along the green and idyllic British countryside. There are passages like this...

The merriment was contagious. The locals seemed to accept us as one of their own — at least Chris and I. They sensed Jonathan’s reticence to interact and seemed to leave him to his own devices. I wasn’t sure what was going on with him. He smiled and drank only water. Other than that, he would make his way to the window from time to time. What he was looking for I wasn’t sure.
Chris and I both drank beer — the locals plying us with free rounds.
We managed to get cornered by an older gentleman with a few missing teeth. With his Lundberg stetson perched upon his head and pipe in his hand, he looked all the part of old English charm. He shared with us a tale. Chris and I hung off his every word.
“Now, the men of Shropshire in the west were well acquainted with the fey folk, or so it is said. And hundreds of years ago, such encounters were commonplace. One such man was Edric the Wild.

...which amused me to no end. Excuse me for rolling my eyes, but this is way too idyllic for me.

It's an entertaining book, but I wasn't sure quite what to make out of it. Katherine, Chris and Jonathan weren't there enough for me to get to know and like their characters. The book felt too short for the story to develop; the plot is slow until halfway through the book, when Chris and Katherine fly to UK to talk to her aunt Marigold, then everything is rushed, rushed, rushed! The end comes too soon.

Love triangle was awkward. I couldn't get the devotion Katherine was receiving from the guys, although they both were quite interesting on their own. The villain was murky. I mean, you do get to feel sorry for her right in the end, otherwise she just pops in and out.

What struck me as very amusing was how the scene of seduction is always different from a man or a woman's point of view.

If you read a female author, 9 times out of 10 the man is a seducer and an instigator. This is not the first paranormal romance by a male author I've read where the sex scene (which is very hot, by the way) introduces the woman as an instigator and someone who takes charge.
All I'm saying, food for thought, ladies. An interesting psychological insight.

All in all, I did enjoy this book. It just wasn't what I expected. ( )

A good, fun, quick read about fairies mixing with our world. There was a lot of mystery, romance & even some time travel packed into the story. David seems to have a slightly bent view of reality that I like a lot. ( )

David H. Burton’s talent for weaving an intriguing, engrossing and magnificent tale explodes in Broken.

When I had first read about this novel, I was instantly intrigued. I love a great paranormal story and even though Broken is sub-titled as a paranormal romance, there is not an excessive amount of romance. So those who may be looking for gushy love, no need to apply here. However, there is a bit of a love triangle twisted throughout the story, as well as some steamy scenes which leave the pages sizzling.

The main character, Katherine Gregory, has always felt as though she was different. Beginning as a young child, she had strange visions; complete with that a little green guy trying to communicate with her. Her mother was never the loving, caring type (though doting endlessly on her brother) and she just never felt as though she completely “fit”. After a doctor prescribed her medication, the hallucinations fled and life was a bit more normal, or at least as much as it could be for Katherine.

It is when she runs out of her prescription and shortly after her mother dies that the visions once again begin. Add to this a cryptic note left within a lockbox at the bank and Katherine is about to make an unnerving and horribly frightful discovery.

A pawn in an unthinkable scheme by her mother, Katherine learns that her life will end anytime within the year, from the day that she turns 24. Her birthday is only 3 short days away and time is quickly running out.

With the help of a long-time friend/recently turned lover, Katherine embarks on a journey to uncover truths, save her life and break a long standing faery curse that has blanketed her family in a shroud of darkness and death for generations.

In Broken, I truly felt myself sinking into the story; the descriptions and characters are incredibly vivid and captivating. David H. Burton presents his readers with a world of faeries, paranormal, darkness and intrigue. He uses his words seamlessly to paint images and scenes upon the reader’s minds which leave a lasting impression, even after the last word is read. The love triangle between Katherine, her current lover and a long-lost first love brings sizzle and heat to the novel as well. The fight against time and meeting the maker of her death adds excellent intrigue and suspense. I truly loved the characters within this tale and felt that the character development was wonderfully done.

Full of twists and turns, highs and lows and plenty of surprises, Broken is a story that will appeal to many readers, male and female alike. Anyone looking for an entertaining and multi-dimensional read will do well to pick up a copy of Broken by David H. Burton.

Favorite Quote: James continued dancing around the room, kissing my nine-month-old head and cheeks.

I remembered that of my mother, she never touched me unless she needed to. She had never fawned over me like she had Geoffrey.

Tears slid down my cheeks as I realized someone had loved me after all. I didn’t think a ghost could cry. I wiped my tears. ( )

Broken by David H. Burton is the interesting tale of the choices a young woman must make after learning that her past isn’t what it appeared to be. Katherine always knew growing up that her mother didn’t love her. She had come to terms with that fact until the day she received a letter from her mother – after her mother’s passing. In the letter Katherine learns that she may not have very much time left to live, as the eldest child in each generation dies after they turn twenty-four.

Jonathan holds two special places in Katherine’s heart. Not only does he hold the spot of her first true love, but also the spot for the first to break her heart. Leaving without any explanation has tormented Katherine for years and nobody has ever came close in comparison – until Chris.

Katherine has always been secretly drawn to her roommate’s brother Chris. The only trouble with her crush is that Katherine has always been just one the guys. After her mother’s letter arrives, things change and Katherine is left with a since of hope…only to find it ripped from her.

David H. Burton has created a unique story and one that I enjoyed reading. The reader is pulled in wondering what Katherine will do with her new found information. Although the ending felt a little rushed, it wasn’t so bad as to hinder the story for me. However, I did have a hard time believing the emotions at times. The majority of the story was written in a way that drew me in and had me feeling for the characters involved. A few parts weren’t written in as much detail and though I should have felt for the characters, I was left feeling as though it wasn’t believable.

If you are looking for a quick paranormal romance with a steamy scene or two, you should give Broken by David H. Burton a read. ( )
