( ) This version of "Der Struwwelpeter" published by Fantagraphics retains the blood and violent instant karma of the German original, so is probably not fine for an elementary school audience. It does trade some of the preachiness of the original for being cheerfully gross and horrible instead. For this reason older kids might find it more engaging and funny than the original, also because it's more bright, colorful and cartoonish. It's pretty fun for adults too (probably its real audience). The illustrations are very good and remind me of 1920's style German graphic design with flat planes of color and simplified characters with big round heads and small bodies. This is a collection of cautionary tales. Each story describes a child who did not listen, or was not being good and how they are punished for their actions. The first tale, called "Slovenly Peter" tells of a boy who did not clean himself properly. Because he is so dirty he has no friends and lives a lonely life. It cautions children to clean themselves properly if they want to have friends. There is another tale entitled "The Story of the Thumb Sucker" which tells the story of a little boy who was warned not o suck his thumb while his mother is away of the great tall tailor will come and cut off his thumbs. Sure enough, the little boy sucks his thumb and the taller comes and cutes with thumbs off with scissors. Now the little boy has no thumbs to suck. Delightfully dark, and a hilarious reminder of how far we've come in terms of writing books for children. Bold, colorful, shapely illustrations lend it a distinctly modern feel. Kids may enjoy writing their own humorous, cautionary tales regarding appropriate behavior in school, proper hygiene, etc. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
