Sabre Orin Brown is a legal advocate for children in the San Diego justice system. She witnesses her share of horror every day. Every now and then, that horror gets personal. When Sabre's friend Betty calls one morning with the shocking news that her husband was murdered in his sleep, Sabre makes it her mission to find the killer. The cops suspect Betty, and Sabre has no leads. It would be easier if Betty wasn't hiding something, but even after she gets thrown in jail, she refuses to say a word about her past and the mystery that chased the couple across the country and ultimately hunted her husband to his death. Sabre can't put her own life on hold, either. She is still trying to protect the two children on her caseload whose parents have brainwashed them with a violent racial hatred. Even more, she's also still recovering from the horrific events of the previous year, when a stalker burned her home to the ground. Life never gets easy, but at least Sabre is not alone. She has the comfort of her calm and stable boyfriend, Luke, and the help of good friends. But when a private detective, JP, follows the murder from Betty's empty trailer home to a small town in Texas and a nightclub in Chicago, it starts to seem like finding the answers may be more dangerous than ever. Only one thing becomes remarkably clear: When the people closest to you have so much to hide, you can't trust anyone.… (altro)

This is the 2nd book in the series and I thought it was just as good or better than the first one. While it wasn't a courtroom drama it was still a thriller. The main character, Sabre, is trying to help a
friend accused of murder and there is lots going on. There is some romance, lots of action, and naturally betrayal. Kept my interest even though I was somewhat trepidatious because I didn't want to know for certain what the betrayal would entail. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series. ( )

I started this book thinking it was the usual crime, legal, murder thriller. But it quickly took unexpected twists & sucked me right in until the last page! It is a great, fun, read and I highly recommend it. ( )

This was the second book in The Advocate series and I enjoyed it even more than the first. Sabre's friend Betty is accused of killing her partner John. With the help of JP as private investigator and her colleague Bob, both of whom were introduced in the first book, Sabre wants to prove Betty's innocence, but it soon becomes clear that Betty is hiding something.
There is a little sub-plot about Sabre's work as a child advocate, which I found really fascinating in the first book, but the main focus here is on Betty's case.
I really like all the characters, and it was nice to see that JP had a bigger part to play in this one. Love the interactions between Bob, Sabre and JP. While the mystery of who killed John was fairly obvious, I still enjoyed the way the author made the characters discover what was going on. I absolutely loved the ending. That was very nicely done.
The audiobook narration by Meghan Kelly was very good. I was especially impressed by how well she pulled off the male voices. Good pacing and enough distinction between the different characters made for a truly enjoyable listening experience.
I am a bit disappointed to see the narrator is changing yet again for the third book in this series. I was provided a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. ( )

Finished in two days -- it was that good.

I listened to a different book by the same narrator. After reading my review on that book, she offered me the opportunity to listen to this book for an honest review. Truth be told, both books were already on my to-read list, so agreeing to listen for review was not a difficult decision.

This is the second book in Teresa Burrell's The Advocate series, centered on the main character Sabre Brown, juvenile court attorney and advocate. Author Teresa Burrell has/had a private law practice where her work focused on abused minors and has herself worked countless hours of pro bono work with children and their families. While this series and this particular story does include courtroom scenes, it is not strictly a courtroom drama per se, but also includes a bits of detective work, mystery/suspense and romance.

In short, Sabre is friends with a couple. The husband is murdered by stabbing in his bed while he slept and the wife was not home at the time of the murder. She does not report the murder until the next day because, when she came home, she did not want to wake her husband. She readied herself for bed in the dark, went to sleep in their bed and did not realize he was dead until the early part of the morning, when she found blood on her pajamas. As it turns out, nothing is as simple and straightforward as it seems and there is more to this couple's history than Sabre knows.

Ms Burrell keeps the dialogue and reveals moving along very well. At times, the descriptions of the scene or action is a bit heavy on the detail and takes away from the momentum of the story, but there are many sub plots going on together and Ms Burrell weaves them together well.

The book was an enjoyable read which kept my interest with the plots as well as the characters. I will go back to read the first, which I had already purchased, and listen to the third, which I purchased because of this.

The book/story itself earns a 3-star rating from me. The narrator added another star for her performance. She does a very fine job ascribing distinct voices for all of the characters, including believable male tones, and handles accents very well.

Thank you, Meghan, for giving me the opportunity to listen to this book. ( )

I received this book for free from Member's Giveaway. I loved this book. It's part of a series but it was great as a standalone book since I didn't read the first one. The premise is a man is found dead and his wife is the number #1 suspect. Their friend, Sabre, must figure out who the killer is and hopefully stay alive.
