There are two reasons why I liked this book. First, I think the author did well in engaging readers and narrating the life of Anne Frank. I also think the book pushed readers to think about tough issues of what can happen to families who fall victim to the horrors of war and dictatorship. In page 32 of the book, readers can feel the suspense as the Frank family were hiding in an annexed room from the Nazis, only to be captured and sent to a concentration camp. Although the author doesn't write the detailed horrors of the Holocaust due to its graphic nature, the theme of prejudice is definitely something students can start thinking about. Another aspect of the book that I appreciated was the pictures and illustrations. The author used real-life pictures of Anne Frank and her family as well as events from World War II to allow readers to see what was going on in those time. Overall, this book is about life of Anne Frank. ( )

I loved this book, it was so interesting. I have always loved reading about Anne Frank, because my grandmother was placed in a refugee camp during this time, because Germany had taken over her hometown in Czechoslovakia. Although she did not have to endure the kind of pain and suffering that Anne, her family, and all of the Jewish people did, this time in history holds a spot dear to my heart. This book has details about Anne's life before her family had to go into hiding, and it was so interesting to see what her life was like before she had everything taken away from her. This is a great book for a younger audience.

I would use this book in the classroom as part of a history unit on World War II. Students could each do a report about what life was like for Jews during the war. This book would also be a good way to work on map reading skills by having the students correctly identify the different countries and locations that were important in Anne’s life.

The book is targeted to the younger reader, so there is not an overabundance of detail to Anne’s experiences. I hadn’t read much about Anne’s years before she was in hiding, and it was interesting to get some details on her life before it was thrown into such horrific turmoil.

I would use this book in the classroom as part of a history unit on World War II. Students could recreate the space where Anne and the two families lived while in hiding to get an idea of just how confined they were. The families were forced to be completely silent and still for hours on end, so I might require the students to be completely silent and see how long they were able to do so. This book would also be a good way to work on map reading skills by having the students correctly identify the different countries and locations that were important in Anne’s life. ( )
