In the chapters of Never Sniff a Gift Fish, McManus will teach you the wisdom that is usually shared only in the close ranks of modern-day hunters and gatherers. To complete your arsenal, McManus also includes The Hunter's Workout Guide and a special Family Camper's Dictionary. Exercises like the hindquarter shuffle will make you move like a hunter. And phrases like "Yip-yip-yip-Owoooooo!" will help you sound like one, too. Whether he's poking fun at fly fishing or taking on some other sportsman's icon, Patrick F. McManus is sure to have you laughing aloud. Norman Dietz's wry narration is the perfect vehicle for McManus' best-selling, tongue-in-cheek works.… (altro)

good, but not as good as "a fine and pleasant misery" ( )

My 14 yo son and I read this together. We're not hunters or avid campers or anything, but McManus has a way of defining jargon as he goes along so the constant stream of laughter isn't slowed down by confusion. Not a lot of wisdom here maybe, because many of the 'characters' are slightly stereotyped role-fillers (ie, the long-suffering wife, the friend who isn't quite as smart as the fish, etc.), but it's all friendly fun. Recommended to plenty of people who might not think they'll actually laugh at it. ( )

-You need never have held a rifle, worn a backpack or even thought about putting a worm on a hook to appreciate these hilarious tales of a sportsman’s life in the Great, and often not-so-Great, Outdoors. Continuing in the same tongue-in-cheek vein that made his first two books such popular entertainment, McManus offers more cracker-barrel wisdom and zany insights into the agonies and ecstasies of hunting, fishing and camping. The precursor to Dave Barry but with a Western outdoors twist. His humor is mild, witty at times and makes for a quick read. Having experience with the outdoors places more contexts to the humor and stories. The book started out slow but he seemed to hit his jokes more often as the text went on. Not really my cup of tea as it is something you can read without any thought but I can appreciate how some folks might like it. Fills a niche like Jimmy Buffet or Lake Woebegone jokes do. ( )

This book is like Country Bumkins meet the Great Outdoors. All the strange stuff you could think about doing, well this guy has probably tried doing it. ( )

Professor McManus has done it again. Another of his side spliting, laugh out loud books on fishing, hunting, and the outdoors. ( )
