After really enjoying the original Mistborn trilogy, I was really looking forward to getting back to that world - which has changed considerably. I was expecting such a change in time period, but the premise of the original books was still there. It was strange to hear the original characters being spoken off as people from history. ( ) I finally got a copy of this in audiobook - and breezed through it - as always - its written by Brandon Sanderson - so its just a good story and well told. It is a little like a mystery at times - and I'm not a fan of mysteries... but it was certainly good - and I'm looking forward to the next 2 books. This was less of a novel, and more of a very long short story. First off, I have to say that it was nowhere near the level of mistborn in terms of depth or quality (it was obviously very short, and there was very little development or sidetracking in the book). I'd say it is worth the read if you're a Sanderson fan and don't mind that it's not as serious as his other work. Perhaps my biggest problem with the book (sadly) was the mechanics of the magic. I'd always loved mistborn for being innovative with its magic system, but in the Alloy of Law it feels like Sanderson goes too far. Too many characters have both allomantic and feruchemic powers, which cheapens the concept to some extent and makes the world somewhat less believable. Miles, Wax, and Wayne are so much more powerful than anyone else in the book that it's actually just absurd, and while that's great for an action-movie type of book, it leaves a great deal to be desired in terms of the book's subtlety and quality. EDIT - Reread June 29, 2022 I’m very surprised that I gave this a 4 last time - this time it felt more like a 2, so I’ve changed the score to a 3. This book just doesnt hit on any key themes that I care about - its an overdone western/steampunk style book with characters that are all more caricature than substance. A real step down from the last series.
Highly recommended for fantasy fans, especially followers of the original trilogy. This fantasy is not a stale visit to a fondly remembered setting. Rather, it offers a fresh view of how a world can grow, building new dimensions into the best of the old. Sanderson continues to show that he is one of the best authors in the genre. "Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds. Kelsier, Vin, Elend, Sazed, Spook, and the rest are now part of history--or religion.Yet even as science and technology are reaching new heights, the old magics of Allomancy and Feruchemy continue to play a role in this reborn world. Out in the frontier lands known as the Roughs, they are crucial tools for the brave men and women attempting to establish order and justice. One such is Waxillium Ladrian, a rare Twinborn who can Push on metals with hisAllomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After twenty years in the Roughs, Wax has been forced by family tragedy to return to the metropolis of Elendel. Now he must reluctantly put away his guns and assume the duties and dignity incumbent upon the head of a noble house. Or so he thinks, until he learns the hard way that the mansions and elegant tree-lined streets of the city can be even more dangerous than the dusty plains of the Roughs.
