Two ferrets living alone with their owner are suddenly seen as a meal for a cat that joins the household. The graphic style of the book allows for more pictures so we see the cat's thoughts progress from a sneaky and sly protagonist to a friendly playmate at the end.

Two ferrets, Fudge and Einstein, receive an unwelcome visitor: their owner is cat-sitting for Marvel, and Marvel thinks the ferrets ("rats") would be a tasty snack. The ferrets escape from their cage, hide in the closet, and attack the cat ("there's two of us and only one of her"). Detente is achieved when they decide to play chase together instead of predator and prey.

This was okay. I liked some of the details that were included (the ferrets sleep in hammocks and have a passion for eating raisins), but overall it wasn't especially exciting or unique. ( )

Little Kid Reaction: "Aw, they are so cute. Can we get ferrets?" Our pet-loving daughter loved talking about the pictures in the book. She thought Fudge & Einstein's plan turned out hilarious and was glad they could all get along.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a cute story that has more layers than it appears on the surface. Kids will instantly focus on the prank, but subsequent reads will bring out other details about tolerance and friendship. I wish we'd have had this book when my daughter was younger. It is an excellent choice for kids who need more text but aren't quite ready for chapter books.
