I've enjoyed [a:Alastair Reynolds|51204|Alastair Reynolds|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1369753656p2/51204.jpg]'s books generally, but I think this series has been my favorite so far. (I will say, though, that the travel to another star suffers in comparison to [b:Aurora|23197269|Aurora|Kim Stanley Robinson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1436300570s/23197269.jpg|42742263].)
[Audiobook Note: Good narrator. I find it interesting how similar her rendering of Eunice Akinya is to that of the male reader of [book:Blue Remembered Earth|9424053] .) ( )

This is the second book in the Poseidon's Children trilogy and a great follow on from Blue Remembered Earth.

Skipping quite a few years into the future there's been some cloning and big ship building to take us to Crucible, the planet that Ocular discovered.

This story is mostly about the shenanigans of the first caravan of "holoships" that are well on their way, and also the shenanigans going on back in the solar system, and what good shenanigans they are too.

Super well written and totally captivating, as usual with Alastair, and a wonderful second episode in this trilogy.

Now i can't wait to get my reading teeth into the final book in the trilogy, which is Poseidon’s Wake. Bring it on!

Bye for now. ( )

The split character that drive a large part of the narrative turned a bit of a boring story struggling with the skeleton established by the first book into something enjoyable. ( )

Much more SFnal than [b:Blue Remembered Earth|9424053|Blue Remembered Earth (Poseidon's Children, #1)|Alastair Reynolds|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1318599915s/9424053.jpg|14308470] & stands alone pretty well.

The triplication of Chiku meant that the jumps between subplot progressions were less annoying, because we essentially has the same viewpoint character in all three subplots. ( )

After decades of reading science fiction, I discovered Alastair Reynolds about three years ago and, given the scope of his work, am astonished that I had not previously encountered him. On the Steel Breeze is the second book of a trilogy set in the not distant future.

The action in this installment takes place a generation after the first book. An alien artifact has been discovered roughly 20 light years away, and generation starships have been dispatched to investigate and colonize the habitable planet, Crucible. Soon, however, it becomes apparent that a conflict is brewing between humans and “artilects”, artificial intelligence.

Alastair Reynolds is amazingly prolific, and his grasp of “hard” science fiction is as good as it gets. His imagination for advances in physics and cultural changes are amazing. However, I have come to the conclusion that his huge body of work is accomplished at the expense of polish. Reynolds’s activity consists of, write, write, write, PUBLISH. Write, write, write, PUBLISH. What is missing is polish and editing. This, along with many other of his works would be far better were it 100 pages shorter. It is simply bloated, turning a 4½ star effort into 3½ stars. ( )
