 Although the ending betrays See’s roots in genre fiction, this is a riveting, meticulously researched depiction of one of the world’s worst human-engineered catastrophes. Five stars ! Reading across the year, this was my choice for the Lunar New Year. The history of China during the Great Leap Forward, as well as family turmoil and reunification are operated in this heart wrenching, beautiful book. (
