A historical romance what-if story where before meeting Fitzwilliam Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet meets and marries Rafael Gainsbridge, the Duke of Deronshire. At only eighteen her life takes a very different turn, yet many of the same characters, adventures and villains accompany her as she journeys through her life as wife, mother and widow. As her heart heals from the premature death of her husband, she learns to love again finding the strength to protect her family and win the love of her lost husband's best friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy. But can their growing and often thwarted understanding survive the villainous plotting of George Wickham. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

I'm a fan of Austen prequels, sequels, and remixes, so when I saw this, I thought it looked promising. And it had potential. Okay, so Elizabeth gets married to Darcy's friend, but he's very sick and soon dies, and then Darcy woos the widowed mother-of-two-Elizabeth.
But, here are the problems. First, Darcy is too attracted to someone who is his friend's wife. Being attracted is okay, being obsessed is not... especially since Elizabeth is married to his good friend Rafael. In the short time that Rafael is alive, Darcy is way too into Elizabeth. This seemed weird to me. Then Rafael makes Darcy promise to watch over Elizabeth and the children by marrying her after his death. Okay, I could believe that. But second, then Darcy pretty much ambushes Elizabeth shortly after his friend dies. Now I know that Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth in Austen's original "Pride and Prejudice" seemed out of the blue, but this was very strange. Not only did it seem rude, but heartless! Darcy's tops his explanation that his deceased friend had wanted their union with the fact that he had been attracted to Elizabeth while Rafael was alive... is just creepy and... totally out of character.
This is not the Darcy that every woman wants, or at least it is not the one that I want. I have to say that I did not even finish this book, because I was so put off my Darcy's behavior. I'm on to the next Austen spinoff instead, and I recommend others do the same. ( )
