Tom Tomorrow'sThis Modern World has been hailed as "one of the most clever and incisive political cartoons in the country" (Los Angeles Times). For twenty years, Tomorrow's sharply funny and fiercely intelligent commentary has been a beacon of much-needed satire in the often-bleak world of media news. Recently, as a regular feature in weekly papers nationwide as well as online,This Modern World has continued to lend the voices of its irreverent regulars--Sparky, Blinky, and Conservative Jones, among others--to the issues of what has been a remarkable, turbulent time in this nation's history. This latest anthology collects Tomorrow's work from 2008 to the present along with never before seen pieces. It covers the drama and spectacle of the presidential campaign, the historic election and first year in office of Barack Obama, the financial meltdown and Great Recession, and the rise of the teabaggers and the battle over healthcare reform, among other madcap topics. The result is more than simply the sum of its parts--at once a cultural artifact and an absolutely brilliant survey of political cartooning at its acme.… (altro)

The first collection of Tom Tomorrow's (a.k.a. Dan Perkins) wickedly funny and pointedly liberal political cartoons following the 2008 election. One would think that his acerbic penguin spokesman, Sparky, would be panting with glee over the outcome, and all mellow and nice-nice. Not so, Cheney-breath. Sparky wastes no time in castigating Obama for promises unkept, an unwillingness to spend political capital and hold Republican feet to the fire, and a tendency to continue Bush policies that he campaigned against. Not that the right doesn't come in for their fair share of abuse. My secret dream is to see Tom Tomorrow, Pat Oliphant and Berkely Breathed collaborate on a strip with their three respective penguins at a round table doing a TV show a la Jon Stewart. ( )

Delighted to finally have a Tom Tomorrow collection in my library. (Very cool of my mom to pick out this out as a gift, I must say.) Will fit quite nicely on the shelf next to the old "Life in Hell" collection for easy access to revisit favorites later.

I'm guessing most progressives either read or at least have an opinion on the cartoon by now so reviewing them is no more complicated than saying, "they are what they were when published." It's just nice to have them on paper and in hand. The foreword by Michael Moore and, especially, the introduction by Tom are great additions. ( )

It's a strange moment in the world, and in most people's lives (mine included, but we'll get back to that in a page or two).
