Charlie is a quiet, awkward teen, or what some people would refer to as a wallflower. He is always watching life happen from outside of the action. As he enters high school, he is dealing with two deaths from his past, his only middle school friend committed suicide, and his Aunt Helen, who died in a car accident on Charlie’s birthday. He is nervous to begin high school but is taken under wing by his English teacher who sees his literary potential and two students, Patrick and his stepsister, Sam. Charlie participates in the fun that Patrick and Sam’s friend group does and develops a big crush on Sam. Because all of these new friends are seniors, as the story advances and the school comes to an end Charlie becomes very depressed about them all leaving. As Sam packs up to leave, she and Charlie begin kissing and move toward other sexual contacts. This brings up repressed memories for Charlie of his Aunt Helen who molested him as a child and he puts a stop to his and Sam’s actions. His parents end up taking him to a mental hospital where he realizes what happened to him as a child and the story ends with him deciding to be present more in life’s events.

I would suggest this book for young adult readers 16 . It does talk about sex, alcohol, drugs, molestation, among other adult like content. However, it also discusses mental health, sexuality, and experiences teens go through which are important to bring to light. Parents may want to be aware of this content before their young adult reads this novel as it has been challenged because of its controversial details.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an amazing YA book that truly captures that time of life when one still has a childish innocence but is starting to experience more “grown up” problems and responsibilities. It is a book in which so much happens yet so little, which in a way parallels the narrator’s assertion that he is “both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” The narrator is Charlie, a 15 year-old kid who is starting high school after spending the summer hospitalized for mental health issues. Over the course of the book, we find out the many things he has been dealing with, but we also just observe him finding himself, adjusting to high school, and dealing with normal adolescent problems. The book works because of Charlie’s engaging personality. The story is told through a series of letters written by Charlie, and in those letters, we get to know his inner thoughts and true personality. He is extremely observant and empathetic and at times seems to know his friends better than he knows himself. Through his sensitive eyes, even the minor characters become vivid and authentic. Plus, as a 90s kid and music lover, I appreciated Charlie's mixtapes (Here's a link to a playlist based on music from the book: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5NQMZilpdg657JGrgNReMz). If you are a fan of coming of age stories in the vein of The Catcher in the Rye, you should definitely give this book a try. ( )

“Charlie, we accept the love we think we deserve.”
“Not everyone has a sob story, Charlie, and even if they do, it’s no excuse.”
And I thought that all those little kids are going to grow up someday. And all those little kids are going to do the things that we do. And they will all kiss someone someday. But for now, sledding is enough. I think it would be great if sledding were always enough, but it isn’t.
Because I guess we all forget sometimes. And I think that everyone is special in their own way. I really do.
The inside jokes weren’t jokes anymore. They had become stories. Nobody brought up the bad names or the bad times. And nobody felt sad as long as we could postpone tomorrow with more nostalgia.
