The Ghost in the bone-white mask who haunts the Ankh-Morpork Opera House was always considered a benign presence -- some would even say lucky -- until he started killing people. The sudden rash of bizarre backstage deaths now threatens to mar the operatic debut of country girl Perdita X. (née Agnes) Nitt, she of the ample body and ampler voice. Perdita's expected to hide in the chorus and sing arias out loud while a more petitely presentable soprano mouths the notes. But at least it's an escape from scheming Nanny Ogg and old Granny Weatherwax back home, who want her to join their witchy ranks. Once Granny sets her mind on something, however, it's difficult -- and often hazardous -- to dissuade her. And no opera-prowling phantom fiend is going to keep a pair of determined hags down on the farm after they've seen Ankh-Morpork.… (altro)

There were some things I quite liked about this book. And the writing was appropriately Pratchett-y. But my main sticking point was that I quite like Agnes Nitt and wasn't happy with how the book treated her. The constant potshots & fat-shaming were distracting and heartless. And then she doesn't even get what she wants? Like, what are we supposed to do with that? ( )

Perhaps Pratchett isn't at hist best when writing a whodunnit but he's always funny right from the very first page! ( )

The witches are back! Or at least Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. Magrat's off being queen or somesuch.

Short version of the plot: Phantom of the Opera, Discworld style.

Slightly longer version: Two witches isn't much of a coven, so Granny and Nanny set off to find a new third. Lucky for them Agnes Nitt (going by the name Perdita X / Perditax)--last seen in Lords and Ladies--is back and recruitable. She's singing at the Opera, highjinks ensue, and they more or less save the day.

I never really cared overmuch for Magrat. Anges is a wonderful addition to the trio. It's a pity there's only one more witches book after this.

As an aside, we also get a sprinkling of how the publishing industry works on the Discworld. Nanny Ogg has published a cookbook, the Joye of Snacks. Even if it's not super relevant to the main, opera storyline, it's still pretty hilarious:

What about this one? Maids of Honor?

Weeelll, they starts OUT as Maids of Honor...but they ends up Tarts.”

Overall, it's probably actually my favorite witches book since the first and among my favorite Discworld books thus far. It's just a really fun read.

Amusing--and yet entirely sensible--quote of the book:

“Walter Plinge said: "You know she asked me a very silly question Mrs Ogg! It was a silly question any fool knows the answer!"

"Oh, yes," said Nanny. "About houses on fire, I expect..."

"Yes! What would I take out of our house if it was on fire!"

"I expect you were a good boy and said you'd take your mum," said Nanny.

"No! My mum would take herself!"

"What would you take out then, Walter?" Nanny said.

"The fire!”

Sir Terry's Witches series is not among my favorites. This is his re-imagined version of the Phantom of the Opera story, featuring Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Agnes Nit, who has run off to Ankh-Morpork. Singing under her pseudonym of Perdita X. Nitt, she quickly finds herself subordinated to a more attractive girl, for whom she provides her beautiful voice. Meanwhile, the benign Ghost starts killing folks, requiring the intervention of Granny and Nanny Ogg. The bastardized opera names are a hoot, as is the fun poked at sponsors, stars, and opera lovers. Nanny's Joy of Snacks is published and Perdita joins the opera in Ankh-Morpork. ( )

My thanks to the people who showed me that opera was stranger than I could imagine. I can best repay their kindness by not mentioning their names here.

'Well, basically there are two sorts of opera,' said Nanny, who also had the true witch's ability to be confidently expert on the basis of no experience whatsoever. 'There's your heavy opera, where basically people sing foreign and it goes like "Oh oh oh, I am dyin', oh, I am dyin', oh, oh, oh, that's what I'm doin'", and there's your light opera, where they sing in foreign and it basically goes "Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer! I like to drink lots of beer!", although sometimes they drink champagne instead. That's basically all of opera, reely.'
The singers all loathe the sight of one another, the chorus despises the singers, they both hate the orchestra, and everyone fears the conductor; the staff on one prompt side won't talk to the staff on the opposite prompt side, the dancers are all crazed from hunger in any case...
Greebo could, in fact, commit sexual harassment simply by sitting very quietly in the next room.
