Elfrida Bell feels stifled in her small hometown of Sparta, Illinois. All the townspeople, except her dear mother, expect poor Elfrida to marry and live her life as a housewife. Elfrida, however, has other plans. She's too smart to waste her talent in the home the way her mother did. And so she runs away to Europe hoping to find a career as a journalist. She had read in many magazines and books that France was more intellectual and forward thinking. When she arrives there, she discovers that not everything in literature translates to everyday life. And being an independent career woman is not as easy as she had hoped. . . . Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

It's honestly amazing. The characters are so interestingly described and complicated. At times I thought them too complicated, but other times they just seemed so real due to their complexities.
My feelings for Elfrida were constantly changing, and I like that. Fondness, sympathy, pity, love, hope, hatred, confusion. And it's really amazing that all of these emotions are also felt by the other characters.
At times it's a hard and difficult read, especially since it's so hard to even find a copy and the only one I could find is full of typos, but I do think it's worth it. There's just so much interesting stuff in there. ( )
