Autobiography of My Little Margie. Most famous as the title star of the 1950's hit television series "My Little Margie," Gale Storm seems, on the surface, much like that bubbly and out-of-breath character, but her story cuts to the bone. In the early 1940s she became one of the biggest of the "B" movie stars, cast in westerns, dramas, and musicals. Then, just as her big screen career was dying, the little screen was born--and Gale Storm scored the biggest hit of her career as television's "My Little Margie." One of the most successful show that lasted even longer, an antecedent of "The Love Boat" called Oh! Susanna." Gale started to drink too much while making big money and at the top of her career. She never got drunk before a performance and never blew her lines; she was a calculating closet alcoholic who kept bottles stashed throughout her house. Her husband of many years, Lee Bonnell, took her from one hospital to another, but she could not kick her habit, and she began to believe she was losing her sanity. Her saving came about through the calculatedly grim treatment of aversion therapy: an experience she relates here with such candor that the steeliest of readers will be shaken. Gale credits her spiritual beliefs with giving her strength to fight her addiction, and considers her recovery a God-given opportunity to serve as spokeswoman for the Raleigh Hills, California hospital that saved here life. I Ain't Down Yet includes interviews with the four grown children of Gale and Lee's marriage--poignant recollections of what it was like to be the offspring of a woman who was equal parts celebrity, mother, and alcoholic. Today, a little older and a lot wiser, Gale Storm is back to being the bundle of energy that was "Margie." She tells her story with moving honesty, includes more laughs than tears, and feels no self-pity. It is a strong story--better by far than any of the "B" movies she used to make.--Jacket flap.… (altro)
