Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:“[A] well-paced and compelling murder mystery.”—Romantic Times

Quilters at the Burl Creek Thimble Club in Alpine, Washing-ton, are planning a fête to welcome back returning member Genevieve Bayard. But Gen’s homecoming is cut short when she dies suddenly at a dinner party. Emma Lord, owner and publisher of the local newspaper The Alpine Advocate, vows to sleuth her way to the truth, and enlists the help of her trusted “House & Home” editor, Vida Runkel. Surprisingly, Vida seems downright unwilling to get involved. To make matters worse, murder isn’t the only crime in Alpine. There have been several burglaries, which may or may not be connected to Gen’s de-mise. As Emma digs, she uncovers a shocking scandal that may point the finger of guilt at one of her nearest and dearest . . . while changing the history of Alpine itself.

“[Daheim] amiably captures the rhythms and crosscurrents of small-town life.”—Kirkus Reviews.

Emma is excited that her brother Ben is serving as Priest in Alpine while Father Den is on sabbatical. She is also looking forward to a visit from her son Adam, another Priest who is serving in Alaska.

When a former citizen of Alpine comes to town, Emma is shocked that home and health specialist Vida flees town. Seems she doesn't like Gen, at all. When Gen turns up dead the hunt is on to find out who wanted Gen dead, and why.

Plenty of small town lore in this one, not as much newspaper time so it was a nice balance. As usual there were plenty of local involved including Sheriff Milo, radio personality Spence and various shop keepers and citizens of town involved in the hunt for answers. ( )

Genevieve Bayard returns to Alpine after a long absence. Not everyone is pleased to see her back. Her death at a dinner party given by a close friend is investigated by Emma Lord. The more Emma discovers, the more she realises the key to the mystery is buried in the past and Vida Runkel, her House and Home editor knows more than she is willing to tell.
An enjoyable read for Alpine and Emma Lord fans. Ben, Emma's brother, is filling in as local priest and Emma ventures back into the world of dating, which inadvertently helps her solve the second mystery subplot of a series of house burglaries. ( )
