Gideon North wants a wife. She must be practical and hardworking. But above all, she must have a hearty constitution. Horribly injured and scarred from his Peninsular War service, Gideon does not want to deal with a wife who flinches every time she looks at him. Gideon's estate manager Charles Borden was his sergeant in the war. Inseparable but almost always at odds, the two men agree that Sarah Whitley is the perfect wife for Gideon. Strong, beautiful and intelligent with a dry sense of humor, Sarah bears her own marks from a life spent in the shadows. When Sarah learns to let go of her past fears, she frees both men to acknowledge the love and attraction that has always existed between them. The three become intimate but the eroticism of their encounters in the bedroom does not guarantee happiness. Gideon's defenses mire them in the past. Only together can Sarah and Charles break through to build a future with Gideon.… (altro)

This was a time-slip book between current day and the 1870's. Dani Sango inherits her father's home after his death. Here starts her adventure in her father's past of art forgery and the book becomes quite intriguing. It takes place at St. Augustine, Florida and takes you back in time with lots of drama you won't want to miss.
This book is a page turner that grasps you and you will definitely not be able to put this book down. The author does a good job of incorporating the two time frames. A line that touched me was "Oh sweet heavenly Father, thank You! You do have plan!" Which exemplified to me the Christian themes throughout the book. That God is in control. And that faith is an important part of life.

I recommend this book and I am sure others will enjoy it as well.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was not required to give a positive review. ( )

Love’s Fortress, book 7 in Samantha Kane's Brothers in Arms series, was deep. Gideon lost part of his leg in the war and he’s burned on his face and arm. So his requirement in a wife is someone who can look past the scars and no one has been able to – until his neighbors set up a meeting with Sarah, a reverend’s daughter. You see, aside from the fact that Sarah knows how to run a household and raise children (she’s the eldest of a bunch), she has a birthmark on her face and that makes her singularly qualified to deal with and know to some extent what Gideon has been going through since the war. She’s used to people looking at her, and not always kindly.

Sarah is drawn to Gideon. She doesn’t judge a man by how he looks, since she’s been there enough. But Gideon, she can tell, is a leader and a strong man. He isn’t cruel, but he is hard. And they get along very well.

Gideon’s friend, Charles, is worried that now that Gideon is going to get married, that he won’t be needed anymore. Gideon and Charles are just friends, although they both want the other – but after the events that led to Gideon’s scars, these two men haven’t been able to bridge that gap between their desires and reality. But Sarah – Gideon wants things to be good for her so he invites Charles’s to their bedroom and these three hurting people quickly realize that three is better than one and with two ganging up against one, Gideon is going to have to open up and move beyond the past.

Ok, the reason I said Love’s Fortress was deep was due to all the hurt (physical and emotional) that all three characters are holding in. Charles saved Gideon’s life during the war and took care of him afterwards. He’s wanted Gideon all this time but Gideon never let anyone in because he thought he was less than a man because of his injuries. Sarah has had to deal with suitor after suitor rejecting her because of her birthmark. But these three people together worked so well and they balanced each other out perfectly. What made this book so good was Sarah’s practicality. You’d think a virgin on her wedding night would run screaming from the house if her husband brought another man to their bed, but when asked why she accepted Charles, she said because obviously her husband wanted it. So refreshing! Sarah made this book work for me, she was such a strong character and at no point did she melt into the background when the men finally acted on their attraction for each other. She was the bridge for these guys, and she was a good strong bridge. LOL

I have to give Love’s Fortress a 4.25 out of 5. Definitely a must read for those who like threesomes! ( )

This was a fairly difficult book to read not because it was badly written but because Gideon, Charles and Sarah were all emotionally damaged and Gideon and Sarah had physical disabilities that held them back. I did like that Sarah was so brave and willing to accept Gideon and Charles. I was impressed that being innocent and unused to men she was so willing to bring Charles and Gideon together as lovers. I was also glad that Sarah was open to exploring all the possibilities open to her concerning her pleasure. This book didn't have as many burning hot sex scenes are the other books which I missed. Ms Kane can write some of the hottest sex scenes in the erotic romance genre. However she chose to put more time into the emotional aspects of the story. There are parts of this story that will have to crying and others will have you laughing. I recommend this book to those that like m/m/f romance.

We finally get Gideon North and Charles Borden’s story. We first met these two in RETREAT FROM LOVE. Anne Goode had gone to Blakley House to accept an offer of marriage from Gideon. She was trying to save Freddy from making the mistake of marrying when she felt she was unworthy of the title of Duchess. Thankfully Freddy and Brett came to their sense and married Anne. That, of course, left Gideon without a wife. This book picks up with Anne, having picked up the habit of interfering with people’s lives for Freddy and Brett, telling Gideon that she has found the perfect bride. Gideon isn't very optimistic about this claim but he is willing to give it a try. Gideon has had some trouble finding someone suitable as wife because the burns and injuries he suffered during the Peninsula War. When the young woman shows up for the interview both Charles and Gideon are surprised. Sarah has a port wine stain on her cheek. While Sarah is shy and uncertain because the birthmark she is a strong practical woman that isn't squeamish. It isn't long before Gideon and Sarah are married and in short order Charles is added to the circle. Sarah is the healing balm that brings Gideon and Charles together finally.

Gideon North has dealt with his disability for years and while not comfortable he has accepted his limitations. Part of the problem is that he is afraid as I am sure all who have lost a limb are that he will fail if he tries to go back to the things that he enjoyed before being injured. He has never tried to get a prosthesis so he would be more mobile and be able to ride a horse again. Gideon is a strong, proud man that doesn't want someone waiting on him all the time. I think that he has been hoping to find someone to bridge the gap between Charles and himself. It didn't take long for me to see that Charles and Gideon really needed to communicate more. They have been dancing around their needs since Gideon was injured. Sarah isn't afraid for Gideon and with grace and patience she breaks through his defenses and shows him he is still man and that he can satisfy a woman.

Charles has blamed himself for Gideon’s injuries for six years. He is sure that if he hadn't pursued Gideon he would not have volunteered for the Forlorn Hope at Badajoz. Charles has loved Gideon for a very long time and it is killing him to see the man that Gideon has become. It takes several heated arguments for the two of them to hash out how they feel and what has been driving each o them all these years. At times it is almost funny that the two of them are so hard headed. I liked Charles he is charming and clever. He is also single minded when he wants to get his way. He is instrumental in restoring Sarah’s confidence in herself. I was very pleased to see these three come together as a single unit. The three of them are strong than any one of them is apart.

Sarah has lived with her birthmark her whole life and it has made her afraid to go out in public. It is sad that we as a people can’t accept those that are different without bullying them. Sarah is smart and understanding. She has raised her young siblings when her mother died. Now that her father has remarried she wants a home of her own. She wants children and a companion to share her life with. It pleased me very much that she was so willing to take on Gideon and Charles. I am sure that Gideon probably frightened her a little bit not because of his appearance but because he seemed so disagreeable in the beginning. Her bravery and willingness to stick with the two men was more than admirable. It doesn't take long to see that she is going to be the glue that holds everyone together.
I enjoyed this book just as much as all the others. I will warn that there are m/m love scenes for those that don’t want to read this type of romance. As always Ms. Kane writes interesting characters that make you want them to have their own story especially Dr. Peters. He needs something that will bring him some peace and get him away from drinking himself into an early grave. I know that there is a story out there but it seems so very far away. We get to see many of the characters from the earlier stories which are always nice. I just wish that we would get to see more of Valentine, Kurt and Leah. It would be nice to have an update on them. Love this series. This was a great addition, all the characters were well written and the storyline flowed perfectly. I am intrigued by romance stories with characters that have a disability or affliction of some sort. Gideon has lost part of his leg in the war and is ashamed of it. He needs a wife but thinks that no one can love him the way that he is now. Sarah has lived her life away from society because of a birthmark on her face. She is fine with it but she knows that society and most other people are not, so she keeps to herself. Charles is Gideon's friend and Gideon wants to love Sarah using Charles as a go between and as a buffer. This is a great story about acceptance and love. Definitely recommend. ( )
