NCLA Review -Grant Horner has taught film at the college level for 14 years. It shows in this, his “theological analysis of film art.” “Discern” apparently refers to what he himself has discerned based on Romans 1—that humans have suppressed their latent knowledge of God, but the truth about God and sinful man surfaces repeatedly in our culture, especially in movies. Horner references movies of different genres to illustrate that point. If he told readers how to become a discerning viewer, I must have missed it. This book is not for the casual movie-goer who wants help in choosing which films to go to (as I expected), but it may have appeal to movie fans who like to analyze films.
