Obviously there are many people in Wales who speak primarily or solely English. But the songs in this book are mostly the famous songs of the Welsh language -- "Ar hyd y Nos," "Llwyn On," "Dafydd Y Gareg Wen," "Rhyfelgyrch gwyr Harlech," and so forth. (Of the 23 songs, 17 have English and Welsh titles and four others have Welsh titles that hardly need translation.) The only Welsh in the book is the (secondary) song titles; the texts are English, as are the main titles (e.g., for the four songs above, "All Through the Night," "The Ash Grove," "David of the White Rock," and "Men of Harlech").
Even the English texts are sometimes unfamiliar -- e.g. Ar hyd y Nos opens "Fiery day is ever mocking Man's feeble sight" -- whereas odds are that you know "All Through the Night" with the words "Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee, All through the night." May this translation be more accurate? Very possibly -- but how can you tell, since (A) the Welsh words aren't given, (B) no translator is listed, and (C) there is no other information about the song of any kind.
And it isn't even a particularly big collection -- no "Lisa Lân" or "Bugeilo'r Gwenith Gwyn" for instance.
All songs have piano accompaniments and guitar chords (though it seems pretty clear that the guitar chords were not supplied by an actual guitar player; they're too weird. But they might give you a start). If that's all you want, this might be a useful book. But I was hoping for a book of Welsh songs. ( )
