Chicago Area Weekend 8/20

What is everyone doing this weekend?

I'm going to Comic Con in Rosemont with my daughter, son, and his girlfriend.

I've got relatives in town, so we are headed to the Art Institute and the Cultural Center today, for the Louis Sullivan exhibits and the Jazz Loft Project. Tomorrow, my neighborhood farmers' market and Carifete. Sunday, we're going out to the Farnsworth House.

If anyone is interested, there's a book sale at Open Books, 213 W. Institute Pl. in Chicago, tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you're a teacher, you can go today; bring your ID.

Dinner at Miller Bakery Cafe, organize and catalog my shoes, and church on Sunday. The Cultural Center is a good choice. When I shop Mag Mile I always find out what's going on at the Cultural Center and if something piques my interest I stop by. It's nice to add something cerebral to an otherwise pretty shallow outing. A couple of months ago I visited the Romare Bearden exhibit: poignant and beautiful!

I just came home from the Gold Coast Art Fair which is no longer held in the Gold Coast area. It was held in Grant Park this year. The pedestrian flow was much improved but it was hard to determine if I saw all of the booths. I also walked up Michigan Avenue to see the ComEd Fine Art Fridges on display.

If you missed OpenBook's (http://open-books.org) sale this weekend, you missed a GREAT event! They had all paperbacks (no matter the size ... there was, for example, a pristine copy of Drawing Down The Moon at 600+ pages there) for $1.00, all hardcovers (including big beautiful art/photography volumes) for $2.00, and you could get a totebag full (with the bag) for $25.00! Plus, these weren't all "dead people's libraries" cast-offs (like so much of the Newberry fair's stock), as a substantial percentage of what was out was "like new". I understand that they do this sale twice a year ... so keep an eye out for it!
