Has anyone else made it through the Story of Mankind? I started it but was completely unable to finish it.

I read The Story of Mankind but it was not easy reading - and it wasn't the story of mankind - just western civilization (more or less). Here's my review. What is really interesting about reading books that got the medal in say the first ten to twenty years and then comparing them to later books is how the concept of "literature for children" has changed. Those first books seem a hard sell for kids.

I completely agree. If the book doesn't appeal to the inner child of an adult, how is it ever going to appeal to an actual child?
