Can anyone recommend a short-fiction anthology of Indian literature? Or, failing that, one that contains a significant number of Indian authors?

Let me begin to answer my own question by this link to the wikipedia article on Indian English Literature. Personal recommendations still appreciated.

You can't go wrong with R.K. Narayan in my opinion... as a starter...

There should be a Penguin Anthology of Indian Writing or some such title around.

I would also recommend R K Narayan or Ruskin Bond.

A wonderful volume edited by Shyam Selvadurai was published a little while ago, called Story-wallah.

It incorporates literature from Desi authors (Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan etc.) as well as stories from the diaspora - authors of subcontinental origin from all over the world.

Many of the major names in South Asian literature are represented there, along with a few lesser-known ones.

This is a great volume for anyone who would like to be introduced to South Asian writing; I frequently explore new writers first through short stories - let them audition for me, as it were - and let that lead me to their novels.
