Dystopian bubble world

I am trying desperately to think of a book I read when I was younger to get for my daughter. It was about a boy who lived in a city in a bubble and he got out somehow and found out that life existed beyond the bubble. I know that's not a lot to go on but i read it about 20 years ago. I just remember I loved it and I'd like to see what my daughter who is now the same age thinks of it.
