I went to hear Tamerlano at Covent Garden last night. Domingo had been booked to sing Bajazet but, as everyone knows, became ill in Tokyo and has needed surgery. The programme noted his absence, saying that he had withdrawn "due to preventive surgery". This sounds rather ominous. I wonder if he will be fit enough to take on the tough baritone role of Simon Boccanegra here in the summer.

I'm sure opera lovers everywhere wish him a rapid and complete recovery. All singers have to stop eventually but he is still too good to lose from the stage.

I was lucky to hear him as Simon Boccanegra at the Met and was enthralled. Sometimes he sounded like a tenor, sometimes like a baritone, but always great. I hope he gets well soon.

It's wonderful to see posts from people who love Domingo. You may find this hard to believe, but my husband and I had dinner with him (and 4 others, I have to admit, 2 of whom were those who engineered our invitation) when he came Downunder in 1990! - and he was exactly as you would imagine him to be. No: even better. :-)
I was appalled to learn that he'd been under the surgeons' knives recently: but it seems he will be OK.
His wife used to say he has the constitution of an ox - which has also helped his vocal production.
Presumably his conducting will be put on hold as well: oh, to be a stand-in for Plácido...

Does anyone out there have any operas ON LASER DISK in which Plácido sings the tenor lead ? I would be very keen to buy, providing I don't have already...
