Books added with wrong ISBN

I Added a few books today by looking up ISBN-13, but it seems only the 10 first digits is used to find other works (and stored in the description), an thus merged the book with a totally different book with the same 10 first digits.

Instead of using 9788252931679, only 9788252931 got used.

Link to the work so we can try to fix it?

Other from this - this is strange - how did you add it? Because it always saves the 10-digit one but it converts properly...

What source are you adding from? It's possible that their systems aren't ISBN-13 compatible.

Lets see... I started by scanning with my cuecat witch resulted in .C3nZC3nZC3n2CNn7Dhr2DxnY.cGen.ENr7E3f2CxPWCNv0EG., which should use ISBN 9788252931679 in the searches. I tried Sambok, Nordbok, and BIBSYS in that order, all of them returning nothin as it seems librarything used ISBN-10 for the search when getting it from the cuecat string and the book isn't registered with that in none of those. It is registered with ISBN-13 though, so entering 9788252931679 manually in the searchbox looks up the right book in Sambok. As the book is only registered with ISBN-13, that is the only number returned in the search too, and it seems librarything just cuts off the last 3 digits when adding the book.

I fixed this manually though, adding the right ISBN-13, and splitting off the other book that it got merged with in the first place.

I added a handfull of books last night, and all of them first trying to use cuecat but all searches got converted to ISBN-10 and all failed. Thus i had to enter isbn manually for all of them, and fix the entry when looked up.

Currently you get the book "Hest på utegang" when searching for ISBN-10 9788252931, but that book actually has ISBN-13 9788252931792.

Searching in which source?

For "Hest på utegang", that would be just searching here on librarything, not any external searches.

Well - this cannot be helped then - if it had been added like this for whatever reason - this is how it will be found later on... If you can track down which source does this, that can be fixed..

In your position I would enter your book manually (and separate it from "Hest på utegang" afterwards, should that be necessary). Not as convenient as using the cuecat I suppose, but it will get your book entered correctly in your library.

Well. That book was the first i noticed it for (since it got a cover that didn't match). But all of the sources i tries (Sambok, Norbok, bibsys) still failes when scanning a ISBN-13 with a cuecat as librarything seems to use the converted ISBN-10 instead (since those catalogs only have the ISBN the book came out with, which is a ISBN-13 and not a ISBN-10).

Trying to add 9788204110060 causes the book details (gathered from sambok) to lack the ISBN-field...

I got a truncated ISBN-13 today searching in 'Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund (GBV)' This book: http://www.librarything.com/work/9698281 (Now very cleaned up.) I had entered the ISBN-13 by hand.

#11: I've seen this too. Searched for book using ISBN-13. Found it. Added it from this source and got a truncated ISBN-13 (the first 10-digits) in the isbn field and thus got an autocombine with several books with the same error, wrong title, wrong default cover etc.
It is very hard to know whether to blame LT or the source library. I do tend to blame the source though, since I've added lots of books without such errors.

I just tried to add a book, Powwow by George P. Horse Capture, using the ISBN in the book, 0931618290. The book that came up was Pow-Wows, Or The Long Lost Friend by John George Hohman. This is an old (1802) book, and it's been reprinted several times, each time with a new ISBN. I was using Amazon All Media as the source. (Ironically, the cover is correct.) I'll go in and fix it manually, but figured someone should know there's a glitch in there somewhere.

This is not a LibraryThing 'glitch'. You got the result that Amazon sent. You can report that to Amazon.

Your problem is not the one this topic was dealing with, and opening such an old thread is usually not helpful. For one thing, back then we didn't have bug tracking.

Using Overcat as a source would have given you several correct choices.
