Hello all. Some of us thought it would be a good idea to list our TBR books for 400's as well as the dogs and books we thought were okay but not great.
So like in the other 400 thread let me know what's on your TBR list, what was just okay and what awful books you wouldn't recommend to your worst enemy. It'd be super sweet if you included it's dewey number.
400 - TBR
I'm not going to list TBR books that have already been listed in the recommendation thread (the one I organize), but feel free to add your recommendation or condemnation once you have read a previously listed book. I'll delete books from this list as they are read and added to other lists.

Ah, this is what I'm good at! I have plenty of books that I selected because they look promising but haven't actually read yet. I haven't paid attention to whether these have already been listed; I'm sure many of them have:
400 Language: The New York Times Book of Language and Linguistics
409 Geographical & persons treatment: Empires of the Word: A Language History of the World
410 Linguistics: In Search of the Indo-Europeans
411 Writing systems: Lost Languages: The Enigma of the World's Undeciphered Scripts
417 Dialectology & historical linguistics: Spoken Here: Travels Among Threatened Languages
438 Standard German usage: 1001 Pitfalls in German (I've read part of this, and it's quite readable, though knowledge of German would really help)
440 Romance languages; French: The Story of French
448 Standard French usage: Tune Up Your French
471 Classical Latin writing & phonology: ABC Et Cetera
475 Classical Latin grammar: A New Latin Syntax (well, I plan to read it....)
481 Classical Greek writing & phonology: Alpha to Omega
493 Non-Semitic Afro-Asiatic languages: Cracking Codes: The Rosetta Stone and Decipherment

Fantastic! Thanks so much for setting this thread up!!
I'd rank The adventure of English (420) as one of the dogs. I just couldn't get through all the lists of words and for some reason I had issues with his anthropomorphism of the language. At some point I gave up on this one, which is rare for me.

You're welcome, but it's totally selfish on my part. This is making one of my weakest classes more doable.
