Have you read the follow-ups to that one, namely: The Mistress of Husaby and The Cross? She's got other ones two that aren't part of that trilogy: Gunnar's Daughter and The Axe. I haven't gotten to any of them yet. I loved Lavransadatter so much that I've been trying to space them out.

This is almost a coffee-table style book; a lot of photos, which is helpful when talking about various scripts. It's not much more than an overview though, very much geared towards laymen.

It's a very quick read, and one you can pick up and put down without losing your place in the narrative since it's basically a mishmash of short essays on various historical curiosities and scandals.

It was alright. The author's not a linguist, so I lowered my expectations from the get-go. I think it's something I would give to a friend who has a superficial curiosity about English language history.

I almost didn't get past the introduction - the editor started off with such an anti-science diatribe that I wasn't sure if I wanted to bother with reading the rest of the book.

It does not get better. At all. I've only a few pages to go and I'm only bothering to finish because the theories espoused within have become so outlandishly hilarious that I'm reading them out loud to my husband.

*Dungeons and Dragons causes demonic possession!
*Dead people can write emails on your computer!
*Francis Bacon was the real Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth's son!

Wow. I'm in a similar position with the Satanic Bible , the ideology and religious commentary was worth reading, but now I'm into the magic and my eyes won't stop rolling.

Does the author actually believe those things, or is he just describing the nutty beliefs of others? (And I am curious about how the Francis Bacon thing is related to religion.)

The authors definitely believe the theories they're pushing. And Bacon's religion tie-in is that he was a Freemason who was protecting Templar treasure, including knowledge of Jesus's descendants.

In content, this book feels like a grandfather to Empires of the Word and The Horse, the Wheel, and Language. It reads like an old grandfather too; dry and dusty without even a peppermint in its pocket to make a car ride a little less boring.

This is a beautiful book, written by Theodore Gray, an element collector who just happens to be one of the guys behind the WolframAlpha knowledge engine. Every element on the periodic table gets a page (or more, for really popular elements) with photographs, scientific data, and a summary of why it is, or isn't, important.

50: Seemed so familiar... Ah, that's why. There's a companion set of cards, which I'd gotten for a nephew who is heading off to college with biology/chemistry in mind. It looked awfully pretty in the book store. Glad it remained so on closer inspection.

Other than that, the book wasn't bad. Seemed to be geared toward Catholics, as the author was a former priest. The last few chapters were a bit much - he went on and on about the need for another Vatican get-together to change doctrine.
