Hello,
This is a long shot, but I read a book when I was a youngish teenager (late 80s or very early 90s but was a library book so could have been older) about a time when the surface of Earth was uninhabitable. The story was from the viewpoint of a child/children who lived in underground tunnels/ducts/pipes, there may also have been biodomes on the surface. The children eventually discovered that Earth was habitable after all, a beautiful place, either no one knew or this was a secret known only to an elite group of humans.
That's all I can remember, but I loved it at the time I read it!
Any ideas welcome, thank you.

Hmmm, someone else suggested City of Ember, and it looks superficially similar from what I've googled, but it was published in 2003, when I was 26. I couldn't have been older than 14 or so when I read the book I'm thinking of, and I think I was younger.

This Time of Darkness by H.M. Hoover is probably the book you're looking for. The main characters are a girl and a boy who live in an endless, multi-leveled city of halls and corridors (no windows). The 80th level of the city is supposed to be amazing and wonderful, but nobody they know has ever actually seen it.

I followed the link and I think you're right, thank you! The cover picture is not really familiar, but I recognise the character's names. I'm off to try and locate a copy now, didn't think I'd get my answer so quickly! :o)

In about the right time frame, but not matching the details too well is The Girl Who Owned a City.
