So, a large portion of my library is non-fiction (a side result of college, and refusing to sell back my books). I've been toying with the idea lately of going through the indexes of my books, and tagging all of the entries there; making my librarything like an uber-index of my entire library. I just can't decide--is this making too much work for myself, adding several hundred tags for each book? Will it "dillute" out my tags too much? Will I ever even use it?
Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

Before adding a tag, ask yourself: would I use it to pick this book out of my library? A lot of the things that turn up in an index might not necessarily be things you want to actually use as a general lookup into your library because those keywords only make sense because they're in the context of the index to the book, and wouldn't be useful when trying select books out of your shelf.

Check out the tags / keywords the libraries use for the works you wish to tag. I know it is cheating, but it works :)

Ehm, depends on the catalog used. At the university library in Groningen they are at the bottom of the page. Checked a couple of other catalogs and I can't find them. I'll admit this was probably not the most helpfull tip...

on the Book Info page there's a section called "About the Work". If you used something like Library of Congress when you added books it will include a list of the subjects libraries use to catalog the book.

it also can be shown in the main library view if the 'subjects' column is displayed. even if you didn't use LoC it will display green suggestions if at least one copy was downloaded from there.

Subject headings might be a better solution, if you want information from an outside source--not your own tags. Including all of your index terms as tags would probably be too granular. Many of those terms are only used in one book.
I think I understand what you are saying with this. I have included some specific information in the comments fields for my own books. I think your idea could really work if we had linked mini-files of tags for each book that could searched all together (yeah, that's a dream :) )
