Hello All!!
I am starting my first year teaching and would like to find the perfect book for the first day or two. -Kind of an ice breaker-Any suggestions?

I have seen the book Zoom be used very effectively. What is usually done is that the book is copied so that individuals can each get a page. Since the book is based on an image being continually zoomed in upon, as students try and assemble themselves in the right order they get to know each other and they work on communicating.

I teach first grade and usually read Tikki Tikki Tembo because we do a lot of things with our names. Chrysanthemum would work just as well because it's about names too.
Good luck!
Good luck!

I used to start my reading class with Math Curse. I then had them make a list of 25 things they read before they see me again. Chalkboards, cereal boxes, whatever. They work together and it breaks the tension from rules, syllabus, etc.

I teach first grade and use
The Kissing Hand
First Day Jitters
Thank You, Mr. Falker (this might be a good one for 3rd about a girl who had trouble reading until she had a teacher that believed in her)

This year I also read Brand-new Pencils, Brand-new Books by Diane deGroat to my first graders. Other years I've read The Teacher from The Black Lagoon.
