This is the first, feeble and fumbling attempt of a layman to share something of the enjoyment and understanding to be got from good historical maps. It will satisfy no-one, least of all myself, and critics are cordially invited to show how this should be done. Maybe, then, we can help each other to put together a thread that is of some use to those wishing to explore medieval history with the aid of maps.
