I just wondered who here had read both of these - Wilkie Collins' original 'sensation novel' The Woman in White, and James Wilson's pastiche sequel The Dark Clue, about a mystery involving the life of the artist JWM Turner.

Not to give away too much, I thoroughly enjoyed The Woman In White, though I wondered exactly why the central twist of the novel was *necessary*. The Dark Clue was a brilliant pastiche of Collins' style, and contained much that was enjoyable, but the darkness at the end felt a little forced, unwarranted by what came before.

Has anyone here read either, or both?

I read The Woman in White years ago, but I always preferred The Moonstone, although since it is also years since I read that, I may be getting the two of them mixed up. :)

I've never heard of James Wilson - better than that book Kept (D.J. Taylor) that I reviewed earlier in the year?
