The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty. The first part is set in the Providence area; the second is a cross-country bicycle journey by the protagonist.
The Haunted Bookshop mystery series by Alice Kimberly. Mentioned as they're set in a fictitious small town (Quindicott) that's neither urban Providence nor touristy Newport.

The Surviors Club by Lisa Gardner is a mystery set in and around Providence.
The first part of Rona Jaffe's The Road Taken also takes place in Bristol, RI.
Those are just two of the books that I recall off the top of my head with RI as a setting. I know I've read more. I'll have to think about them though.
