I have recently read The crimes of Charlotte Bronte and I was wondering if other people have read it and what they think about it - especially about the facts that are presented.
In any case I think the book should have been called the Crimes of Arthur Nicholson - but hey, that doesn't sell as well ;)

>1 celiacardun: Celia, I thought it was an interesting concept, and a fascinating read. It could have been true, the author makes his thesis plausible and that is why it is so fascinating. A bit far-fetched but then all sensational stories are!

Yes I also thought there were some interesting and suggestive things in it - that's why I wondered whether all the facts that are presented as facts are indeed true. I'm afraid I don't know as much of their lives... It's a good incentive to start reading other biographies :)
In any case, I'm not too surprised about the image they sketch of Charlotte: after reading some of her letters and to some extent in her books as well, I didn't get the impression she was a particularly nice person... But the book pushes it quite far and sometimes their justification of the conclusion leading from some facts (usually announced by saying something like 'surely the only conclusion can be that ...') is, I think, a bit unlikely... Other more innocent explanations could be thought of as well.
