Anita, the puppies are just beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing these photos. We only did one litter with our standard poodle but it was quite the experience!

The are very cute and a lot of work ;-)

They are all housbroken now, at nearly 5 weeks, but they can't hold it too long. Last nigt I could sleep 5 hours in a row before Egoi woke me up to tell me it was potty time. So 7 pups to the garden and 15 minutes later all back inside for some more sleep.

They start to play more and sleep a bit less, it is much fun to watch them playing (and sleeping, but that's me LOL).

This is our 5th litter since 1998, the pictures at Franks lap started with our first litter, we gave the new owners the photos of their pup, so they could see how fast they had grown in the first 8 weeks with us. And that became tradition.

Nice to see your new thread :) In reply to >241 (ronincats) on your old thread, just wanted to express pleasure at the idea of a DWJ book with more Chrestomanci in it. Will look out for that.

The pups are still adorable. Our kittens are two weeks old today and just starting to walk. Are puppies as wobbly walking as kittens are? We have lots of giving up, sitting on our bottoms and having a nap!!!

Also, did you have a clear runt of the litter and did you do anything about it? We have one that is a definite runt and are now feeding it ourselves as well as letting mum do it, she is now keeping pace with the others on her weight gain whereas she was losing 10g a day on their progress.

Yes pups start the same, first crawling to mother, then wobbly walking and now they all walk, some even started running.
We had three that stayed behind the first days, I bottle fed them with goats milk twice a day. That way they kept up with the others. The last borns (Esmoreit and Eki) were behind at birth, opened their eyes a bit later and walked later.
They develop well, but stay about two days behind the others.
The third I bottle fed was Eoos, she was big at birth but lost a lot of weight the first two days. She is catching up well, but I keep a close eye on her.

Egoi is easy going and very sweet, in some ways he seems to be wise. He has the longest legs and weighs most, he uses his weight to keep the other pups from dominating him.

Eki and her sister Eoos (the two smooth girls) do everything together. Lay in the bench together, tease the others together etc. Yesterday they first started to do things without the other.
Eki needs time before she likes people. If others have her on their lap for the first time she tries to escape. Second time goes better and after the third time she settles.

Funny, Egoi was the one I was drawn to too.

It seems that people who look for character in a dog are drawn to Egoi, Chow show people like Erilo, Endo and Eki.

No, two are sold now. Embla and Egoi.

One will stay ours but is going to live with a friend.
We can't keep a male with Gladdich, but two males in this litter look very promising (Erilo and Endo) so we want to keep one of them to show.

We are still in doubt if we keep a smooth female.

Oh my, Anita, they really have grown this past week.

Thanks for posting the photos every week. I look forward to seeing them.

I love the one of Eki looking up into Frank's face!

They aren't babies anymore, but full-fledged toddlers. I'll bet they are soaking up barrels full of love right now--but remember, most of them will be gone in another 4-6 weeks and how you will miss them!

I went into the Chow section to see the big dogs and there are some wonderful photos there. I particularly liked the canoe series, with a big nervous dog in a canoe. The one of her looking over at her reflection in the water was priceless. Also loved the seaside ones with the dogs playing in the water.

No, no babies anymore, running around, jumping, playing. Gladdich has a hard time when he goes in the puppy-pen in the garden: seven puppies with puppy-teeth attacking LOL
Yes I know they will leave, at least I hope so! Three will leave next week, for the others we still need good homes. Eoos is going to stay, she reminds us very much of our first smooth bitch, Pandora. If it takes too long to find homes, Eki might stay too, but we really can't keep a male together with Gladdich.

Eki and Erilo had an off-day today, I noticed Erilo in time to take some pictures of him. I noticed that Eki was missing on the photos when I was viewing them on the computer. I'll catch her next time ;-)

For the UK they don't have to go in quarantaine anymore, they may spend the 6 months after their rabies-vaccination at their breeders place. But I think that is still to old to go to a new owner.
But if you really would like a Chow, there are a few smooth Chow breeders in the UK ;-)

All photos captured my heart. I love the ones where the puppies have their heads sticking out of the box.
For some reason photo 43 tugs at my heart strings the most.

I imagine your house is very busy with company stopping by just to see the puppies. Years ago when my bichon, Whisper, had a litter of four, the couple who owned the male dog that bred with Whisper came by each and every night at dinner time....It drove me NUTS! Finally, we had to nicely put our foot down and ask them to be more considerate.

Photo 43, Esmoreit, is incredibly cute.

Today Esmoreit sold himself, he is leaving instead of Egoi, Marcel and Esmoreit had that click. Puppies sometimes DO choose their owners ;-)

Oh yes a lot of visitors, but not too many yet ;-)
And visitors are good for the pups, Chows tend to be aloof and have to be socialised intensively

Yesterday I took the last series of photos, next week 4 pups (maybe 5) will leave.
And Eoos is going to stay, she reminds us so much of her great-great-grandmother Pandora.

A letter for each litter born at our place.
We started with Pandora, who had one litter (A-litter), then her grand-daughter Callisto, she had two litters (B-litter and C-litter), we kept Chimay from the C-litter and she gave us the D- and E-litter.

Esmoreit left Tuesday and is doing very well, he lives with two other smooth Chows (an uncle and an aunt of Chimay).

Wednesday Embla and Endo left. Endo was our pick of the litter, he stays ours, but is living with a friend. We have hope he will do well in the showring.

Today Egoi left, he is going to live in France. To fill the void Crackers has left. Crackers was a litter-brother of Chimay who got killed in an accident last year. When they saw we had puppies from Chimay they asked if they could have a male again. Egoi liked them at first sight and so did they :-)

So three pups remaining, we hope to find homes for Erilo and Eki, but if no one comes within a month or so, I guess all will stay ;-)

When they reach 8 weeks they demand more and more personal attention, so actually we are glad when the first ones leave ;-)
And, yes, some time for serious reading would be nice. But as at least one of the pups is going to stay, the next months will be filled with raising a puppy into a well behaved young dog.

Well a next litter will be, if all goes well, in three years or so. This was the last litter for Chimay. The delivery was again hard on her, we had hoped a second litter would go easier, but it did not.
We hope that Eoos will pass all health tests then we can carry on our breeding program with her.

Anita, read this in the local paper this morning:

"Jarod, a 12-year old chow chow, scored a spot in history for chasing a black bear that was trying to attack his master, Donna Perreault, in Genelle, B.C." He was inducted into the Purina Hall of Fame, for animal heroes (it's been running for 41 years now).

Thought you'd get a kick out of that. 12 years old and chasing off a bear!

I have been busy, with the pups.
Now only Eoos is here. Eki left last Wednesday to Finland. Some photos of Eki and Eoos last Saturday.
Now the ongoing job of raising Eoos has really started, walking her 4 times a day, keeping an eye on her when she is awake... And Chimay and Gladdich need some extra attention.

And I have been updating my website not much change to see, but a lot of work that included some work on each and every page (214 pages!). But it is ready now ;-)

Eoos is not very lonely, Gladdich is so happy with her, if we would allow him, he would play all day with her!

Eki had a hard time at the airplane to Finland, I really hope some rest will help, her new owner said she was skittish, afraid of noises and wary about people :-(
I hope to get better news after the weekend.

I always like the images you paint regarding your furry friends. Sorry to hear Eki had a hard time. I hope things are better this week.

This is a larger and busier group than our 75 challenge last year. I've been working around the house and have been busy at work and thus haven't had the time to devote as much as usual. I'm behind as well.

I find gardening to be balm for a weary soul. There is something about digging earth, planting and watching the life grow that gives hope and promise.

Little Eoos has done some damage in the garden, but nothing is realy ruined. The plants will grow again and maybe do better in a new season next year.

The bi-annual book about Chow Chows, with articles, photos of new Champions from many countries. Always a pleasure to see.
Sadly not many smooths in this edition, but there is a photo of Demi (Xin-Feng's Demeter) in it, the smooth bitch from our previous litter.

I haven't read any of Diana Wynne Jones books, but they are on my tbr pile. Would you recommend starting with the Chrestomanci books?

Very enjoyable read, about a family of singers/travelers in two countries. The North is free and the South suffers from dictatorial earls.
Father Clennen, mother Lenina, daugther Brid and sons Dagner and Morin travel in a pink cart with their horse Olob trough the South. They pick up a traveler who wants to go to the North.

A beautifull, funny and touching book.

Junior grows up in an indian-reservation, where most inhabitants are alcoholics. To avoid this sad destiny, Junior decides to go to a white school outside the reservation.

This book should have got an Award, sadly this year there are no awards for YA in the Netherlands, because of lack of promotion money, so this jewel has to do without :-(
But I am going to put this book on my wish-list, pretending it won a Zilveren Zoen.

I am not very well at the moment.
Last Thursday we had to put down Gladdich, our beloved blue boy.
The last weeks we had many incidents, he tried to bite people in the neighborhood he used to love, he got more and more agressive and finaly attacked Chimay.
Chimay has wounds all over her head, ears, next to her eye and her paws :-(
Luckely she is a strong girl and is healing.

We think Gladdich was in a lot of pain, but were unable to find it in time.
At least he is pain free now, but we miss him, but are releaved a bit too, the last weeks we tried everything to help him, but it was not enough...

Oh, Anita, what a tragedy! I am so sorry!

Anita, I am so sorry to hear about Gladdich. We had to put our older dog to sleep last Saturday, and it is a very, very difficult thing to do, in spite of the knowledge that they are now out of pain. You have my deepest sympathy.

It was hard, especially because Gladdich was very young, only nearly 3 years old...
I still think I see him laying somewhere in the house at one of his favourite spots and then realise he is gone. But I know that phase will fade.

The story is facinating, but the style not so good. 12th century, a boy called Olrac grows up in a group of robbers. Of each of them he learns valuable lessons. Then the group is killed by the authoroties. Olrac escapes and goes on a search for his real parents.

Sequel to Olrac, style a bit better, story a bit less.
Aude and her mother live together, her mother gets seriously ill and Aude tries to take her to a famous healer. Sadly her mother dies and she barely escapes from a group of men with bad intentions. She finds the healer in a group travelers and joins them. In the mean time people are accused of witchcraft and are prosecuted. Olracs father sends him to the city to see what is going on.

I have some books by Federica de Cesco that I like, so when I saw this one at the library I took it and was not disappointed.
In Tokio a student finds out about a family secret and gets befriended with a half Japanes girl, who was raised in Germany. The difference in culture between West and East and old Japanese culture are the themes.

the previous book reminded me of the triology by the same writer, where she writes about ancient Japan. The main character, Toyo, tells the story of her mother who is the last priestqueen Himiko.
The story is mixed with the legends of Amaterasu and her brother Susanoo.

I am hanging in and Chimay is healing well, I think only a small scar on her nose will remain.
I am going through all the photos of Gladdich, to make a photo-album on my website to go with his tribute. Making this brings up many memories and it helps to heal.

On my website I have tributes and the stories of their life of all our dogs that passed through the years. So each has a little monument (sp?) there.

I miss you all too, but I don't read much at the moment.
The library has moved to an other building and was closed for two weeks. Yesterday Frank went ther to return the books and said it was way too crowded for me, so I will wait a bit until I try to explore the new library.

I am feeling a bit weird, can not believe yet Esmoreit is really dead. Marcel, who is a gardener, was working in our garden this week. That was planned some months ago. He needed a bit more time, but that is understandable. Today he is doing the last things...

This book was written in 1960, I did read it long ago, but did not remember much. It is about a boy and his father, rich people, who travel the world. Now it is very dated, everyone travels, but then only the wealthy could...
They go to India, Japan, Australia, Mexico and many other countries. After Gideon got very ill in India, the first chapter, he decides he want to help children in poor countries, make a difference. In each country he meets many people and makes a difference for at least one child.

I finished a large update at my website today, including a page about Gladdichs life, a tribute and a photo album....

That being said, no one expects everyone to keep track of all the threads, even without the difficulties you have gone through over the course of the year, Anita. I hope that you will continue to stick with us! There are a lot of people here who care about you and genuinely want you to stick around, myself included!

I bought this book last week, now my collection of all Rosemary Sutcliff books translated in Dutch is nearly complete: only one book to go!

Liked this one very well too, she is one of my favourite writers. The only problem was that the translation was not very fluid at a few pages at one third of the book.
After a disaster in Germany a young Roman officer is send to the North of Brittain. Far away from Rome the ways things go are different, the soldiers have their own habits. Then some tribes act together and they have to get away.

London 1894, 16 year old Adrian Mayfield, a working class boy, discovers the world of the rich and his own homosexuality in circles around Oscar Wilde.
At the start of the book Adrian works in a shop, but he gets fired. He has no place to go, his parents are divorced, his mom lives in a very small place together with his sister and his father is an alcoholic who tries to earn his money in the theaters.
In the shop he has met an artist, Augustus Trops, desperate he goes there. This man introduces him to Oscar Wilde and others around him. Adrian finds a job as model for some artists first Augustus Trops and later Vincent Farley.
As in the summer everyone leaves London he has no income anymore and becomes a male prostitute. In this world the prostitutes blackmail their clients... So Adrian is happy when everyone returns in the fall and he can go back to his art model work.

Great book! I hope it gets translated soon, so all of you can enjoy this too!
It is the first part of a triology, I am going to find the other parts soon.

Hi Anita - just catching up on some of the threads. I love your tribute pages for your beloved Gladdich. I went to a 'party' yesterday for my friend's guide dog, Orem. We all brought a gift for him and had a lovely get together.

I love the Pern novels by Anne McCaffrey so keep reading - I only found out about them about 5 years ago and read them all in about a month.

What kind of guide dog is Orem (I like his name!), there are many kinds of service dogs these days.
Today at the library I saw there are many Pern books to go, but they had two other books I had been looking for, so I'll take the Pern books the next time.

I still think the original 5 Pern books are by far the best. The first ones were Dragonflight, Dragonquest, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and The White Dragon. The rest, you may read because you love the concept, or to follow some of the characters, but most of the originality and charm are diluted. So you should like the five above even more than the one you started with, Anita.

Oram is a labrador (spelt his name wrong in last post). He's Verna's 4th guide dog (first male), she's been blind since she was about 11. Her last dog died suddenly and she was lucky to get Oram, his initial match didn't work out so he was available. He is full of fun when he's off duty and has also been known to get up to a little mischief during Verna's sessions at the gym!

Adrian has found his love: Vincent Farley and has a great time with him. But then the trial Wilde - Queensberry start and Vincent thinks it may be a good career for Adrian to be a jounalist and helps him to get a job. Adrian follows the trial and starts to understand how most people think about homosexuality. His lover can't cope with it and goes to a doctor who thinks he can cure them, he takes Adrian there too.
The the trials coninue and the male prostitutes Adrian worked with in the summer are forced to testify. Adrian is not important enough, so he seems to be off the hook. But the other boys think he has betrayed them...

Anne McCaffrey never wanted to write about King Arthur, she disliked the Hollywood adaptions. But in the book Sword at sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff there was one intriguing chapter, about the horses of Arthur.
So when someone asked her if she could write a YA book about Arthur, she knew what she wanted to write: how Arthur breeded larger horses who could carry the knights in armour.

Galwyn works on the ship of his uncle ever since his father died. His uncle is not a nice man. They sail from Brittania to the main land and back. One day they get special passengers: Artos and his men, the go to the south to buy horses. Galwyn speaks many languages and helps Artos on his way.
When Artos is gone, he decides to run away and join Artos and his men.

A good told story, well written, gives an other vision on the well known Athurian legend.

Three books that are together The Boreal Moon Tale.
I loved the books of the Saga of the Exiles and Galactic Milieu by Julian May and decided to read some more when I saw these books at the library.

These three are not as good as the above mentiond series, but anyhow a nice read. Julian May is very good in creating a world, fantastic elements, action, romance and the history of this world. But most characters stay flat.

On the fictive midieval island of Blenholme live humans and other species. There is magic, stones used to make magic things to happen, a price (in pain) to pay when using those stones and lots of noble men and women.
Four human countries on the island fight eachother, one King tries to unite them.

I found the first two books the best, both 3 1/2 stars
The third book gets 3 stars

and while I am here, I will list my best reads of 2009, I don't think there will be an awsome read in the remaining days of this year (and if there is, I can always add it).

I only ever tried the first book of the first series Julian May wrote, and didn't make it through it. Sounds like I need to try some of her later work.

I loved the first series of Julian May, the only problem at the start is that there are very many persons and names introduced.

The Boreal Moon Tale books are fantasy.
Rampart Worlds are Sience Fiction.
So it is just what you like most if you decide to give her a try.

In my opinion the best books of Julian May are her Saga of the Exiles, starting with The Many-Colored Land. The first time I tried to read that book I failed, but second time I got into the story and read all 4 in a row. They are on my To Be Re-Read list ;-)
