I recently read and enjoyed this book, Playing with Trains : A Passion Beyond Scale by Sam Posey. It's fascinating as a description of both a "passion" and a subculture even though I've never had a model train. (I wanted one when I was a child but it never happened.)

Dragonfly, thanks for the tip. I've added it to my wishlist on kalahari.net (a sort of South African equivalent of Amazon) and will order it soon. "A passion and a subculture" accurately describes the world of railway enthusiasts!

I've now read it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Another book about railway obsession is Platform Souls: The Train Spotter as Twentieth-century Hero by Nicholas Whittaker. It's a good book about a hobby that is often derided in the UK.

Although a video and not a book, Model Citizens, A Film by Sara Kelly is really good. It explains the differences between model railroading and toy trains then continues with a variety of enlightening comments from hobbyists. It's available on amazon.com.
