I would like to someday read all the winners and honor books (which are, IMO, often even better), but I know I probably won't get it accomplished in the near future, as I do so much other reading.

So far this year I've read The Graveyard Book (2009 Winner) and Miss Hickory (1947 Winner).

Some of my all time favorites are A Wrinkle in Time (1963 Winner), The Egypt Game (1968 Honor), Enchantress from the Stars (1971 Honor), and The Witch of Blackbird Pond (1959 Winner).

There are over 300 Honor winners I think. I can hardly imagine finding and reading them all. I am trying desperately to do this myself. Some of the ones from before 1950 are exceeding difficult to get copies of. I am always suprised that more of these award winning books are not republished. A few of my editions are really old and fragile. Too easily damaged to let my kids read them own their own. I am reading a few of the old ones to them. Good luck in your search!

Thanks, sevedra! Unfortunately, at this point I think reading all of the winners, let alone the honors books, is more of a lifetime goal than anything else. I really wish they would reprint a lot of the honors books. So many quality children's books are out of print!

So true about the amount of quality children's books out of print. I have three kids and am always looking for copies of books I remember reading as a kid myself that i want them to experience. i can not believe they don't reprint award winning books more though. I would expect those to be more available.

There are (only) 88 Medal winners :) Many of those are not too hard to come by. You can probably find at least 70 of them without much effort. Of course, finding the time to read them all is another thing entirely!

I own 160 honor winners and all 88 medal winners. But I have only read 26 or 27 of those 248 books. Since I am trying to read some to the kids and have them read some on their own, I am ending up reading them myself at the kids pace.

I hope you have fun reading the ones you find, when you can :)

Thank you! I look forward to reading them! I don't know what kind of pace I'll set, between course work and other more mature books, however.

WOW.. You own 160 honor winners and all 88 medal winners! That is an amazing library.

I'm looking forward to this challenge. As a member of the 75 book challenge group, one of the people there , Famultsee, got me hooked on YA books and I'm now officially addicted to them.

I'm currently reading A View From Saturday and this is a book also recommended by my friend (mentioned above)

Well, I do have three kids who love to read. I love to read and find YA a great genre myself. So, I like for me and the kids to read something more filling than just the fluff they might choose for themselves. One of my sons loves Captain Underpants. While those are funny and good entertainment, they don't really convey anything to his brain and growth as a person. The Newbery winners often have some real meat to them and are entertaining at the same time.

I babble so much. I have a REALLY lot of books anyway, so having less than 300 of them be Newbery winners isn't all that much, less than 3% of my library.

Marcia, thanks for mentioning Miss Hickory. I was able to obtain this from my local library today. Actually, I was in amazed and spent a great deal of time in the YA section. They had two shelves marked "Newberry Award Winners!" Naturally, I brought home quite a few.

You're welcome! Miss Hickory is fun. The illustrations are great, too.

The YA section is my favorite part of the library... right up there with the children's section. My library has several shelves of Newbery winners, too, but they're in a weird place in the kids' section by the family movies. I think they should be more prominently placed.

I went to the library yesterday and brought home Kira-Kira, which I'm excited for.

I'm excited to read it, too... Hopefully I should get to it sometime this week, I have a few others I should finish first. :(
