Two Children Trapped In Bronze Age Tomb?

Hello there,

I'm trying to remember the title of a children's book I read about 14(?) years ago.
It involved a boy and a girl who lived near an island, upon which there was an ancient barrow or tomb. They get involved when some criminals ( I seem to recall them being led by an older, possibly elderly, woman) try and steal the treasure. One part of the book that has stuck in my mind is a point in the story where the 2 children have been locked in the barrow by the criminals, it scared me quite a bit!
I think the story was set somewhere on the coast of Scotland/Borders, but that could be a fabrication of my faulty memory. The only parts of the title I can remember is 'white' and 'goat', tho' again these keywords may be inventions of my brain-banks. I have used them in a few search engines and turned up nothing, but if anyone knows or can help, I would be very grateful indeed. I'd like to try and track down a copy on eBay or Amazon if I can, to see if it really was as frightening as it seemed the first time round!

Thanks again, and all the best.

I'm certain I read this. But I have no idea what it was called. The only thing my brain keeps popping up with is The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, and I'm pretty sure that's not it.

Some parts of the plot match one of the stories in: The New Adventures of the Mad Scientist's Club. In one of those, the boys are on an island (though I thought in the US), and they are locked in an old army gun battery by some criminals. It's a while since I read it, but I think a sister is helpful in finding the boys.

There are some similarities to the end of Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper - ancient cave, criminals after the treasure, stuck in the cave, in the UK - but some differences too - 3 kids, not set in Scotland, not really "locked" in, etc.

My subconscious is throwing out Seven White Gates by Malcolm Saville. Again it doesn't really seem to fit too well...

Do you know if it was an older book when you read it or a fairly new one?

Hi guys, and thanks for so many replies!

Scorbet, I bought it new from a discount warehouse in England (near Blandford if you're interested!) about 14 years ago. It was paperback, and I can't remember the publisher. My first thought is that it was probably a Puffin, but then thinking about it, I seem to recall that it wasnt a Puffin, and thinking at the time that it should have been, then after reading it, thinking it was too scary for a Puffin, which is nonsense I know. So if you can follow that, well, I'm 75% sure it's not a Puffin!
It was unread when I bought it, and seemed new, though as it was in a discount outlet it may well have been sitting around somewhere for a long time; about 6 months ago I was at a similar shop, and they were selling sealed Game Gears! So it could have been awhile. I would say at the earliest it would have been printed in the late 80's. As to when it was written, I can't say, to be honest it could have been anywhere from the 50's onwards.
The cover had the older woman and her heavy-set accomplice, the two children, and a golden statue (of a goat as I remember) inside the barrow. I'm pretty sure it's not any of the titles mentioned so far by everyone but thanks for all the help and suggestions, I really appreciate it.
Cheers.

Just one more thing, that MIGHT help. It had a rather sinister tone to it. I said 'might'!
Thanks again.
