A friendly Hello from someone new

Hi, I thought I'd introduce myself. Everyone can call me TOM although I am a girl. I love to knit, crochet, and afghan all sorts of things although I'm still learning and everything I do is rather basic.

I'm hoping to meet some nice people and maybe learn some useful things about knitting. I'm completely self taught from online tutorials and my mom's books so my technique isn't the best but it works for me.

Also, I'm a 22 yr old college student so please forgive long posts and any possible chatspeak or emoticons that might slip out. The internet is my life and even when I'm projecting, writing, reading, and homeworking, I'm online.

That's about it but if anyone is curious about me. Ask away. I'll answer pretty much anything.

I'm new too. Just set up my LT account today (have many books to add). I knit continental since I learned my knitting from an European and a Brit, while living in the Pacific NW.

Welcome to both of you! There are a lot of interesting threads in this group, and I hope you'll enjoy reading them. There are all kinds of knitters, too, from master knitters to newbies, and someone is always willing to answer knitting questions. BTW do you know about Ravelry.com?

I read about it in another thread but have not checked it out yet. I've been so absorbed in getting everything just right in my LT library and setting up for successful 999 and 75 Book challenge that I haven't picked up a project, looked for new patterns, or even really read a book in the last few days.

can you see the OCD coming out?

MaggieO, is ravelry still hard to get on? Last I heard, people were backed up waiting for admission, so I haven't ventured over. Sounds like a cool site, though.

Meantime, I like knitty.com--good free searchable patterns.

I'm happy so many younger women are knitting, and so many seem to have had the gumption to get Gramma to teach them or to teach themselves.

My mom taught me 40+ years ago so that I'd sit down and stop fidgeting--or fidget with something useful.

There's not nearly the wait as there was when I joined last year (or year before?). The wait seems to range from 1 to 3 days only. I had to wait a couple of weeks.

I also knit the continental way. The working yarn is held in the left hand and you sort of pick up yarn instead of wrapping it around using the right hand. The stitches are very even and the process is economical and fast.

I think I knit my own completely unique way then LoL it appears I knit a bit of both ways. ^_^ sometimes the feeder yarn is in my right and other times its in my left and if I get lazy, I put one needle in the crook of my knee and speed knit... its great for making scarves for stuffed animals you want to personalize. Goes nice and quick. Also a great way to ensure that the stuffed animal doesn't end up in the give away bin when the child accumulates too many LoL

With all the work college students have to do and yet you find time for knitting? You go, girl! Does it help you relax during exam times?

Well, I guess you can tell that I'm new to the group--I just joined a few minutes ago and immediately posted a message, one intending to answer a particular "TheOnlyMe" post. Now I see it just hanging in there at the end, without any reference to whatever message I was replying to. I just got so excited fnding a group of knitters! I posted without sufficient thought, I think. Sometimes it seems I am the only one in my area that knits. It's good to find others. 8-)

Then you will definitely want to check out Ravelry. It is an online community with 275,000 members, mostly knitters and crocheters, but you also see weavers, spinners, etc. They have lots of patterns (sometimes free, sometimes not), and users post photos of their completed projects, so you get to see what those patterns look like in different yarns and on different body types.

You have to request an invitation, but their website reports they are processing people through within about 4 days now. Some of us were on the waitlist for weeks!

A warning though...both LT and Ravelry can be VERY addictive, taking up time that might otherwise be spent reading and/or knitting.

Ravelry is great! Not just for the fiber craft stuff, but the forums rock! As with LT everything is discussed and at any given time there will be over a thousand people participating.

#10-11- Welcome! Yes, it can be very tough to balance school work, my job, and all of my hobbies but its fun to try. Sometimes I don't get to pick up yarn for weeks at a time and other times, I get to sit and knit for hours on end... or crochet, or make an afghan, or bead, or read a book... oh, and did I mention I also make collages from discarded magazines? It's my way to recycle hehe

It really does help me relax during stressful times either at work or in school and fill the gaps during down time. It helps that I'm a multi tasker though. I'm a huge fan of finding books on cd (especially when its shakespeare) and I sit and mindlessly work with yarn while I listen and absorb. Learning through osmosis!

Unfortunately, learning through osmosis is not an option this semester. I'm taking math (attempting to finish two classes of math in one semester) and a Graphics Design course which I am IN LOVE with! Contemplating a career in Publishing... who knows, maybe someday I'll be the layout editor of your favorite Knitters magazine!

I'm not so new on LibraryThing, but rather new in this group. I set up my LibraryThing account back in 2006, and then forgot about it for some time, partly because the fact I wouldn't be able to put in all my books (I have a lot of books) with a free account was a bit demotivating. A few weeks ago I remembered about this place, and am now a Lifetime Member (the weak Dollar does have its advantage for us Europeans.).

Now, for knitting. My mother is the greater knitter in our house, but I am starting now too. It started with making something for my sister (I can't go into detail since it's going to be a present and she is on LibraryThing too. For once though I was here first. *grins* Normally she seems to discover these things before me, so each time I am first it is a special pleasure. :D ).

I also do other crafting, as well as drawing, and multiple other hobbies.

I am new to LT and would like to say hello. My name is Linda and I am also on Ravelry. Ravelry was a little too much for me at first, but now that I can find my way around, I enjoy it much more. I think LT may take a little time too, but I like what I have found so far.

I knit by hand and by machine. I have a Silver Reed 860 that I don't think I will ever master.

zoinks! Japanese! I have two friends that would get a kick out of that ^_^ Not an easy language by any stretch of the imagination. Trying and I'm emphasize trying LoL to write it sure is fun though. ^_^

machine knitting... interesting. I don't think I've actually seen a knitting machine in person. They seem kind of tempermental when you look at them. What are your opinions as an owner?

I am new to this group and new to LT. I am a lifetime lover of reading and all forms of needlework (except for a few I haven't tried yet). My mother taught me and now I am teaching my daughter and granddaughters. I am also on Ravelry. I'm very impressed with both sites.

I have to fit work into my life but I'm reading like crazy...The Nine Tailors by Dorothy Sayers (an oldie but goodie). I stopped knitting for a bit to crochet market bags for myself and my daughter. They are adorable, a fabulous alternative to plastic, and fun to make.

I absolutely love my knitting machine. It does not take the place of hand knitting, it is just different, and I do both. The machine does take a lot of practice and patience, neither of which I have, but it is fun to play with. Mine machine connects to the computer and can knit designs, but I am still learning to use that part of it.
