I have not read that many books yet for this challenge, but as the new year is about to start, I wanted to go ahead and start listing them. I will look for lots of ideas from everyone else. :)

A start on this list. I was disappointed by What is your Dangerous Idea? I liked the Art of the Book and my daughter who is an artist and fellow booklover also liked it. I found the Science of Chaos somewhat interesting. I have started a bibliography but it does not have a DDC listing, so I am not sure where to put it -- either 010 or 011, I think.

ETA By the way, when it lists books as General Collections in France, does that mean we have to read it in French? Or is a translation OK?

I know that I have read more books in this category than I have listed. I will have to hunt them down. I think that I gave a few of them away unfortunately. Last summer I read the Apocrypha with Introduction and Explanatory Notes. I had never read this part of the Bible all together. The illustrations were lovely. I had forgotten just have violent some of the Old Testament is. I am on a plan to read the entire Bible, and I am trying to use commentaries along the way, so I hope that will help me with this topic. Christ Among Us was the text we used when I went through RCIA to join the Catholic Church. I like the book. The Power of a Praying Parent was a gift from my sister-in-law and I loved this book.

Ivy Briefs was a book that my sister-in-law let me borrow. It reminded me so much of law school. The Innocent Man was gift from my mother-in-law last year for my birthday. This was quite an interesting book to me because it all happened not far from where I live.

Silent Justice was a book that I received as a door prize. It is a signed copy. This book is a legal book similar to the true story from A Civil Action. I enjoyed reading it. I read Paradise Lost for the first time this year and I was totally blown away. I loved it. Under Milk Wood was read aloud by one of my English classes in college, and I wanted to revisit it this year. And of course The Hobbit is such a great story!

A Pirate of Exquisite Mind by Diana and Michael Preston (941.7250822092). This was a great history of the life of William Dampier, naturalist, explorer, and pirate. This was a great book.
The Physics of Star Trek (791.45.72) and Beyond Star Trek (001.9.01.53) by Lawrence M. Krauss. Both books talk about the physics involved in Star Trek, Star Wars, and Independence Day. They were pretty entertaining. We picked these up when my family went to hear the author speak. He autographed our copies for us.

Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read (982.6). This is the story of a team of soccer players who survived a plane crash in the Andes Mountains.
Woodbrook by David Thomson (941.7250822092). This book is part memoir of the author's time in Ireland and part history of Ireland. I believe that the author is actually Scottish.

By the way, I read this book called Momsense by Vicki Marsh Kent which was a collection of articles about childrearing and family life which had been published in the local newspaper the Waco Tribune-Herald. This book is from a while ago and I gave it away after I read it. I can't find it on google. How could I determine the DD# for it?

Here are a few more books that I read this year:
Einstein's Universe by Nigel Calder (521.E35.ZC)
I read this to help me understand Einstein's Relativity. Ha!
Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition by Anne Frank (940.53.18.092)
This reread was a different version of the diary. What a compelling story!
The Double-Cross System by J. C. Masterman (940.548642.M39)
This was the story of the use of double agents by the British during WW2. Yes, I have too many 940 books!
If This is a Man by Primo Levi (940.5318.L578a)
This was the most amazing books and one of my top reads of 2008. Yet another 940.
Confessions by St. Augustine (242.A.92)
Although I had a hard time getting into this at first, I hung in there was got more drawn into it as I read.
The Trial by Franz Kafka (833.912).
This was an interesting book -- dark and scary, also philosophical. I think I might read some more by Kafka.
Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset (839.82.372)
This Noble Prize winning trilogy about medieval Norway was great.
Momsense by Vicki Marsh Kabat (306.874). See above for description. This was light and cheerful.
Faust by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (832.6)
I had always wanted to read this play. I was interested to find that the patron saint of my church St. Bernard of Clairvaux played a role (with a name change -- I discovered this through the notes).
Relativity: The Special Theory and the General Theory by Albert Einstein (530.11).
I was doing ok with this until the appendix.
The Apostolate of Holy Motherhood by Mark I. Miravalle (232.91.APO)
This was a free book handed out at church about 20 or so years ago. Really this book did not speak to me.
The Shooting Party by Anton Chekhov (891.7313).
This was a murder mystery and the first thing I have ever read by Chekhov. It was entertaining, but Chekhov did not displace Tolstoy for me.

I have a couple of other books that I read this year, but I can't find where I put them. I need to locate them to get the DD#. I hope that I read a lot more next year.

I found one of the books that I was looking for Bernard of Clairvaux: Selected Works by St. Bernard of Clairvaux (248.4.82) which I enjoyed reading during my prayer time. I was disappointed to see that I have repeated a DD# again. I am going to have to spread my reading out more next year.

I just finished a really great book! It is 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff (818.5409) which also included The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street. The first book is a series of letters between the author in NY and a bookshop in London. The letters are hilarious and heartwarming. The second book (also included in my volume) is the diary of when the author finally gets the opportunity to see London. This book was terrific. It was suggested by the Book Nudgers Group and they were right on the money with this one!

This book had few words but incredible photographs. Rachael Hale from New Zealand photographed animals for her book It's a Zoo Out There. The images are incredible. If you like animals, this book is worth a look. At the end, she gives details about each subject which are charming. This book was a Christmas gift from my husband and daughters. I love it. :)

Happy New Year, everyone!

Well, I did more research on the dewey decimal number for The Trial by Franz Kafka. I found two different numbers, one in 830 and one in 833. I went with the 830 which I found in Library of Congress; however, I could see how 833 could be the right one with a typo in my copy of the book (which said 883). I will leave it where it is for now, because it seems to make sense at last!

Hi BJ!

I usually use the LOC for the Dewey number but have also found a few books with different numbers assigned by different libraries. It looks like you're making good progress! It's time-consuming but fun to figure out which categories you have already read. A lot of the older threads in this group have great suggestions for unread categories.

Hi, carlym!
That's a good idea to look at the other threads for book ideas. Finding the DD# has been challenging at times. But you think when you get it out of the book it will be right! However, I knew that Kafka did not write any Greek plays. LOL!

I will check out the books that you have read for some suggestions. :)

I just finished the book Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat who Touched the World by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter (636.8092'9 dc22). I really wanted to read this book and gave it to two people for Christmas. Luckily, after my daughter read her copy, she let me read it before she leaves for college. I finished just in time. This book was both happy and sad. I loved it.

ETA the dewey decimal number, how could I forget that?

I finished a book called Mark: A Devotional Commentary: Meditations on the Gospel According to St. Mark edited by Leo Zanchettin (226.3/077 21). I read this as a part of my journey to read the entire Holy Bible. It was a fast read.

I just read a biography of George Washington called His Excellency: George Washington by Joseph J. Ellis (973.4'1'092 dc22). I read this as the first book for the presidential biography challenge to read a biography of all 44 presidents before the next election. This book was really great. I learned so much about George Washington. I am really glad that I read this book and plan to read more books by Joseph J. Ellis.

Hi BJ,
I have decided to join this group. I just haven't created my thread yet. I will try sometime with in the next week to write a list. This looks very interesting and a way to expose myself to many different authors, genres, etc.

Hi, C4R!
I am glad that you are joining the group. I posted a message to you on my 999 thread. I am trying to think where I saw a link to a complete list of the Dewey Decimal System Numbers. They vary somewhat over time. I will go find my printout. OK, this is the site listed on the bottom of my page -- I hope that it has not expired! http://www.tnrdlib.bc.ca/dewey.html I still can't make links. I thought this would link, but now I am not sure. I will look for your thread. Have a great day!

Well, I followed the link and the listing has expired. It has a link to a place where you have to purchase the newest version DD#. Since you are not a library system, I am sure that you would not want to do that. Does anyone else know where there would be an older version listing that would be free and not copyrighted?

Thanks BJ,

I did see one on Wikipedia in the DD group. I am going to print that out at work today and go from there. I wonder if I went to the local library on Thursday if they would be able to give me a listing of the most current DD classification. Thanks for the help. I am going to work on my thread over the next few weeks and then back track to Jan. with the books I have read (not many)

I read The Leopard by Guiseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa translated by Archibald Colquhoun (853.912) (touchstone problems). I read this for the Group Reads -- Literature group. It was about an old aristocrat facing Italian unification. I enjoyed the many instances of animal imagery, especially metaphors, and the characterization of the old Prince. I don't know why the touchstone will not load, but I will try to fix it another day.

I added Praying the Family Rosary by Father Thomas P. Looney, CSC. (242.74). This book was recommended by our Parish priest for prayer during Lent. I really enjoyed it. It includes all four mysteries of the rosary. Thanks, especially, to tututhefirst!

I added L'etranger (The Stranger) by Albert Camus, translated from the French by Matthew Ward (843'.914). This book is stated to address, according to Camus, "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd." So it was somewhat like Kafka's The Trial, but not as absurd in my opinion. This was a quick and interesting read.

I have lost my pages with the titles of each section. And my list of books I have been reading for this challenge. So I thought I better add the one I just read right away. I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. This book of true crime in Savannah reads like fiction with an unbelievable cast of characters.
