City of Light is a murder mystery set in turn-of-the-century Buffalo, NY. The Pan-American Exposition is about to be opened and all seems well with this thriving and prosperous town, but a local headmistress is perturbed by the mysterious death of a local engineer. Is there a link between his death and public outrage at a plan to convert water from Niagara Falls into electrical energy? Did the engineer stand in someone's way?
I see marcinyc has already written a positive review of this one, so I will just point you in its direction! I enjoyed it for the vivid writing and period details, and the clues are certainly there if you want to detect whodunit. If I had a criticism, it would be that the narrator-heroine is perhaps a little too broad-minded for 1900 society :)

Oh yes! What a wonderful book! I loved, loved, loved City of Light and cannot wiat for Lauren Belfer to write more in this vein. Books like this are the ones that make me wish I had a time machine so I could go back in time and see things like the Pan-American Expo in person.

You know, I wonder if Belfer will write any more? It occurs to me that Belfer put so much into this one - and cut off any possibility of a sequel - that she'd have to go in a completely different direction if she wanted to write anything else.
Some writers have just one book in them. It would be a shame if Belfer didn't write anything else, but at least we have City of Light.
