Hi everyone,

Seems like there are a number of fun kindle books that are free at the moment, according to the Kindle Reader:
http://kindlereader.blogspot.com/

Also described here:

Just thought I would let you know.

There are a bunch of free books at amazon if you keep checking back. Right now I think there are 11 free books being offered. Just go to the Kindle books page and sort by price from lowest to highest and there you go, every free book they offer will be at the top. I have collected quite a few free books from Amazon, and read most of them.

You are correct, there are 11 books at the moment. I already had 7 of them but did not realize there were more. Thanks for the heads-up!

Last night in an idle moment I checked Kindle books on Amazon. When I listed the books from low to high prices 4800 free Kindle books came up. Everything from Uncle Remus to The Velveteen Rabbit to Collected World Classics of Literature in many volumes.

There may be even more such books on Amazon. After 400 pages the system stopped showing me new pages so it is entirely possible that there are even more such books.

Most of the books were 75-200 years old. A lot of them were divided into volumes and/or parts. At any rate, they are there to be downloaded and enjoyed. I downloaded 48 books in a haze of greed and maniacal glee.

One way to find the freebies is to use a third-party search, like jungle-search.com.

You can specify a price range and then add a percentage off filter (but 99% off and up never gives me good results).

Also, look for these books to be free, soon:

Once A Cowboy - Linda Warren
Price of Passion - Susan Napier
The Bride's Baby - Liz Fielding
Dancing In the Moonlight - RaeAnne Thayne
Baby Bonanza - Maureen Child
Hide In Plain Sight - Marta Perry
A Very Special Delivery - Linda Goodnight
Homespun Bride - Jillian Hart
Crime Scene at Cardwell Ranch - B.J. Daniels
Snowbound - Janice Kay Johnson
Irresistible Forces - Brenda Jackson
Kiss Me Deadly - Michele Hauf
Stranded With a Spy - Merline Lovelace
Slow Hands - Leslie Kelly
His Lady Mistress - Elizabeth Rolls

They're already free on fictionwise.com (in eReader format only) and the Kindle Store has two entries for the books, but only the regular priced version is available right now, but they should be live, soon.

#4 -- The problem is that this huge volume of "public domain" books drowns out the contemporary freebies. If you want to exclude these "public domain" books from your search, put -domain into the search box. (That's a "minus" sign before the word domain, which excludes all "public domain" books.) It's a tip I picked up from a thread on Amazon's Kindle board.

Thanks, CurrerBell! That is a great tip. k4k

Thank you CurrerBell for the -domain tip, I was a bit annoyed that I couldn't find the free contemporary books anymore and wasn't happy about having all the free pub domain books clog up the list. Your tip fixed that!

Go the Amazon home page. At the top of the page, in the Search bar, use the drop-down box to select Kindle Store. Leave the search term blank and click on the GO button. This will take you to main page of the Kindle Store.

Underneath the Search bar you'll see a bar of links for Kindle Store, Buy a Kindle, Kindle Books, etc. Immediately below that you'll see the words Kindle Store (not a link, and it will probably be in orange, at least in Firefox). Immediately below that you'll see something like Showing 1 - 12 of 271,886 Results (though the number of total results will of course vary depending on the total size of the Kindle Store whenever you visit it). Showing 1 - 12 of 271,886 Results should be appearing across a bluish background, and if you look to the far right of that bluish background you're going to see Sort by and a drop-down box that should say "Bestselling" (which is the default search).

Just use that drop-down box to change the search order. You can sort by

Bestselling
Price: Low to High
Price: High to Low
Avg. Customer Review
Publication Date

I'm answering your question right now on a laptop running Vista Home Professional and using Firefox 3.0.8. Appearance of the page may differ slightly depending on your operating system and browser.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more.

EDIT: to correct html/ul coding that doesn't work as expected on LibraryThing.

I can sort by price on the amazon web page -- but not in the search mode on the kindle itself. that just sorts by bestselling. Does anyone know if there's a way to change that?
