Reading about New Hampshire

Here are some recommendations:

In the Fall by Jeffrey Lent (Vermont author and book is set in both NH & VT).

Interestly, the real Fortunes Rock is in Maine, it's part of Biddeford, (my mother was born and grew up there). Why Anita Shreve had to change it's location is beyond me).

Presumably because she wanted to link it all in with her other NH writing? She gave Olympia the surname Biddeford so she's clearly not unaware of the Maine connection! :)

My hometown is featured in The Dark House and there is even a big, pastel-colored Victorian house there that is eerily similar to the one in the book.

I know I've found NH references in other books as well, just can't think of them off the top of my head. Since John Irving lives here, I think he often uses NH as a locale...Hotel New Hampshire...or was that just a name?

I think parts of The Dead Zone take place in NH.

New Hampshire can indeed claim J. D. Salinger, John Irving, John Griesemer, Dan Brown, Brendan Dubois, Jodi Picoult, Janet Evanovich, William G. Tapply, Robert Begiebing, Katherine Towler, P. J. O'Rourke and the current US poet laureate Donald Hall to name a few...

And Irving's Hotel New Hampshire does offer a bit of New Hampshire flavor.

Thanks Bo Peep for filling me in; I didn't read it. When I was given an advanced reader's copy I gave it to my mom to read (She was probably 82 at the time); she thought it was okay. She gave her copy to my Aunt who lives just off the beach still. I believe Ms. Shreve's publicist told me she summered there.

Grace Metalious lived in Gilmanton NH while she was writing Peyton Place. Apparently she was inspired by actual happenings in the surrounding towns and villages.

I don't think Our Town: a play in three acts by Thornton Wildercould have taken place anywhere else.

Many of the books by Jodi Picoult take place in New Hamsphire.

That's true. Now that Brad Delp is dead, she is one of our surviving 'celebrites'.

Wasn't there a murder mystery set on the MS Mount Washington? I've been looking for some time for it but can't seem to find it.

Tom Eslick has written several mysteries set in the White Mountains.

Also Body Surfing by Anita Shreve. It's the same beach house all the time: "A strange couple approach the house (...) Sydney knows what they are saying. 'Remember the Vision crash? The one in Ireland?' Sydney wonders if Mr. and Mrs. Edwards mind the mild celebrity of having bought the house from the culpable pilot's widow. She wonders if they got it for a song."

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott is set here along with a few others...
