I'm looking for a Nancy Drew book that matches this scene: Nancy Drew and her friends made unconscious by chloroform (soaked cloth over their mouths and noses) - and it happened outside a building...? I read it late 1980s or early
1990s - could've been published in 1980s or 1970s abouts. A paperback edition (yeah most likely not an original).
It is NOT: The Spider Sapphire Mystery, Mystery of the Tolling Bell (that happened in a cave and no cloth), Nancy's Mysterious Letter, or The Ghost
of Blackwood Hall.

Hmmm, I think I may have read this. I read most if not all of the Nancy Drew's in that time period. I think Nancy gets chloroformed in The Emerald Eyed Cat Mystery (touchstone doesn't appear to be working). She's kidnapped in that one.
3amysisson
I thought getting chloroformed was practically a requirement in Nancy Drew books! OK, I'm being a little facetious, but I assume it happened more than once....
4bookel
Thanks. I already had The Emerald Eyed Cat Mystery wishlisted, so until it turns up and I read it, I won't know for sure ... any other suggestions welcome, too. :) I've always enjoyed reading a Nancy Drew book now and then.

I know which one you are talking about but I just can't seem to remember so sorry I couldn't help but I am no where near my book shelf at the moment. but I believe it is in the first ten.
6bookel
Ok, let me known when you're around them... or can list the first 10 titles (unsure, they seem to change the numbering around, depends if Armada editions or something...).
7Jizzyjazzy
Here are all the Nancy drew books that I have that I remember having some capture of some sort: The Secret of the Old Clock#1 The Hidden Stair Case#2 The Bungalow Mystery #3 The Mystery at Lilac Inn #4 The Secret at Shadow Ranch #5 The Secret of Red Gate Farm #6 The Clue in the Diary #7 Nancy's Mysterious Letter #8 and The Strange Message in the Parchment #54. As I remember The Clue in the Diary was the book she met Ned and I believe the one you are talking about, if it is not the one than it has to be The Strange Message in the Parchment or Nancy's Mysterious Letter. If not any of those I really have no further ideas but let me know when you know it or it will keep on puzzling me for ever.
8bookel
Hehe, now you know why I'm trying to find it! It is puzzling! I cannot recall the title, will have to read some once I can obtain them, to figure it out. Thanks for the list. As I mentioned at the beginning it's not Nancy's Mysterious Letter, so that rules one out. I'm pretty sure a whole group were rendered unconscious, and they may have woken in the same spot ... or someone went missing in the group, I can't remember.
9Jizzyjazzy
i would read every single one of my Nancy's but i am 1,000 miles away from my bookshelf so I can't do that but i'll let you know when i find out and I re-read your original message after I had posted Nancy's mysterious letter in my message
10bookel
Cool, thanks. I am reading a Nancy Drew every now and then. I think the one I'm after might be from the 1970s or 1980s, not certain about that, but pretty sure it was a paperback, probably published by Armada or something similar.
11Jizzyjazzy
all of my Nancy drew books are hard pack so it might be hard back in other collections.

Nancy and Ned are chloroformed outside a cabin in #61, The Swami's Ring. My copy is a Wanderer paperback from 1981. It's not really a whole group though....
The thing about the whole group reminded me of #65, Mystery of the Winged Lion, in which Nancy and George are kidnapped, and when Bess goes to find them she is too. But it's not chloroform in that case -- just gags. I checked :).

Thanks for looking. I don't recall Swami, yeah... fairly sure it didn't happen outside a cabin, that I recall. I have the Winged Lion, yet to read. Don't think it is it either.

That link seems to pretty comprehensive for published works. The only Nancy Drew books I own are all hardcover (mostly purchased (after dancing and hopping around my parents) at Target pre-1979). If some of those titles look promising, I can see what I can track down through assorted libraries.
I just posted an email to an old colleague of mine who was a huge Nancy Drew junkie. *fingers crossed*

Have you read any of the books mentioned so far and ruled them all out then? (In a case like this, where you've got a potential lot of new information, it might actually be better to make a new thread. Not everyone may read through the whole thread and go only on the information provided in your first post.)
17bookel
And people usually get told off for making a new post...?
Thanks coleoptera but not sure if I could recognise it by title. I read several Nancy Drew books at the time and looking at them now the titles all sound so similar.
Saying that, I might have read the below titles (Armada paperback editions, so probably from 1970s, 1980s), maybe, but cannot check (again, plot details are not hugely memorable). They're wishlisted for now.
The Emerald-eyed Cat Mystery
The Phantom of Venice
Swami's Ring.
I've read the below Armada paperbacks and it is not them.
The Spider Sapphire Mystery (Nancy Drew #4)
The Flying Saucer Mystery (Nancy Drew #52)
Nancy Drew & The Clue Of The Tapping Heels/The Mystery Of The Tolling Bell/The Phantom Of Pine Hill (Nancy Drew Mysteries)
Mystery of the Winged Lion (Nancy Drew #59)
The Bungalow Mystery (Nancy Drew #13)
The Clue In The Diary (Nancy Drew #75)
The Ghost of Blackwood Hall (Nancy Drew Mystery #11)
The Whispering Statue (Nancy Drew Mystery #14)
The Mystery at Lilac Inn (Nancy Drew #74)
The kachina doll mystery
I've yet to read this, which I have.
The Mystery of the Moss-Covered Mansion (Nancy Drew #29)

In The Sign of the Twisted Candles on page 184 or in the chapter "A Rascally Ruse" something like that occurs. But it happens more in a doorway.

According to Wiki Answers, she was choloroformed in Nancy's Mysterious Letter, but it was not until the later series, The Nancy Drew Files, that she was chloroformed on regular basis. In the original series, she just generally got hit over the head.

hmmm, tough girl.

Wiki doesn't have all the answers. I haven't read Nancy's Mysterious Letter, and I don't think it was one of The Nancy Drew Files books. It was most likely one of the so-called rewrites published by Armada.

How about The Double Jinx Mystery? Nancy finds Ned and Oscar chloroformed outside a bird cage in a rare bird farm...
25lahochstetler
In The Thirteenth Pearl Nancy and Ned get chloroformed as they leave the building where the pearl cult is celebrating.

I have a question about Nancy Drew. I was wondering what book it is in, where someone comes into her house, and is in her room, and catches her, and forces her to her knees, and then either ties her up in covers, or stuffs her under the bed. And then he drops his ring, which she finds later. I just can't figure out what book that is in.!!!
28astralux
My mom suggests either The Secret of the Twisted Candles, The Mystery of the Old Clock, The Mystery of Larkspur Lane, The Haunted Showboat, or (and she's faltering a little with remembering this final title) The Mystery of the Red Door/Gate.

I'm sure that Nancy was chloroformed in The Ringmasters Secret, as she came out of a telephone kiosk, Miss Drew was grabbed from behind and a rough cloth held over her nose and mouth until Nancy was overcome and fainted. When she regained consciousness, Nancy was in the back of a truck with Bess and George, however, I can't remember if the other two had also been drugged.
I am sure the bad guys/girls chloroformed Nancy much more in the Files series but can't remember any specific instances.

>1 bookel: Well it's 10 years later but I figured I'd answer your query. You are most likely thinking about The Mystery of the Winged Lion but you are slightly misremembering it. In the book Nancy and George are grabbed outside a building and there is an illustration shows the kidnappers holding their hands over the girls' mouths and it does look somewhat like they are being chloroformed although they are not. Later Bess arrives and is also captured. The three girls are then tied up and gagged. At some point their captors decide to move them to another room so they soak their gags with something sweet (likely chloroform) to make sure they did not struggle during the process.

30- It wasn't an original but found a 70s or 80s edition (the type the public library had that I borrowed from at the time) on openlibrary so will have a look. Thanks.

If that's it, this topic might deserve some kind of award for time between seeking and finding.

If that's the only reprint set in Venice then I probably read it before, since I do recall reading a Nancy Drew story set in Venice. Just finished reading. It's possible it is the book, but wish I had a sense of deja vu. I'll read the others I've collected that I think I read too.

>34 bookel: fwiw, you said in post #17 that it was not the Winged Lion.... did you maybe read it in 2009 and that's what you remember? I always thought it seemed a good fit for your description.
There's at least one other paperback book set in Venice -- The Phantom of Venice.
