Help needed

Two questions.

1. I'm looking for library cataloguing software that would work really well on the MAC. I'm also wondering if there is software that can be shared by hubby (the PC user) and me (the MAC user) - so we can both share our library database, you know?

2. I have an "old" clamshell ibook that I have been carrying around the house to catalog books on LT. It's running OS 9 point something and Internet Explorer 5, I believe. While on it, I can catalog books but I can't tag them (unless I'm putting books in manually, of course) and it also won't bring up my library. Would that change if I upgraded to a newer version of Explorer or dumped it for something else (I use Firefox and Safari mostly on the Mac-mini...)

OS9? My condolences. I don't know if there are any modern browsers for OS9. Mozilla's download page suggests something called iCab which I know nothing about. Don't know if that would enable the sexier LT features or not....

I, however, do know something about iCab. It's not the greatest, but it's awesome in that one guy has basically hand-coded it from scratch. It's been going on for about 9 years or so now, and it continues to improve. It's good about adhering to standards, and, even better, it continues to support Mac OS from 8.5 up.

Also, with only minor cosmetic peccadilloes, iCab seems to handle LibraryThing's sexy features just fine. The only problem I've noticed is that when you leave a field blank, iCab inserts "undefined" into the field. Note, however, that this doesn't mean that LibraryThing records that field as "undefined". A simple refresh reveals the field to still be blank.

So, in conclusion,

Go get it!

One of the few things that keeps me in 9 is the Mozilla browser WaMCom 1.3.1. It is the best browser available for OS 9.

A1) Well, I'm sure most of us would have to say for cross-platform use LibraryThing is the top contender. You can both log onto LT without any special software etc.

Try 'Tellico' which is available for Mac.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. And thanks for the condolences, although not necessary, as my mini runs 10.3 and everything works wonderfully on it (I use Firefox here).

I did download icab and it does seem to run LT better. I can now look at libraries but still can't tag from within my library (the double click feature doesn't exist). Still, better than before, thanks. I don't use the laptop that often; mostly now to catalog books since it's more portable.

As an added note, we haven't thought much further about a non-web-based cross-platform database, if there is such a thing. Using LT does have us thinking about it but, in the end, perhaps we'll settle down and be satisfied with just LT.
