Are you a Bay Stater? (I live in Easthampton, MA.)

Mr. Toad was a character in The Wind in the Willows, but I believe Kenneth Grahame was British. I'd be interested in knowing if Burgess was writing before of after Grahame.

Apparently, Burgess was writing after Grahame (who was born in Scotland and raised in England):

The Wind in the Willows (1908)

Mr. Toad and Danny Meadow Mouse Take a Walk (1914)
Old Mr. Toad Gets His Stomach Full (1914)
The Adventures of Old Mr. Toad (1916)
Buster Bear Invites Old Mr. Toad to Dine (1922)

Wikipedia's a wonderful thing!

Wow, Burgess was prolific! Lots of titles on Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg. I might try reading some of them to my kids.

I think you might mean Arnold Lobel, he wrote books about Frog and Toad, such as Frog and Toad are Friends, and he was born in the 1930's. These books are great to read aloud and are perfect for early readers.

Hey! I grew up not too far from you, extrajoker. Amesbury, MA. Where I-95 and 495 meet on the map. I'll be visiting Shelburne Falls in a couple of weeks for my friend's wedding, too.
